Hello all,

Over the next 12 months I will be recovering from a major back operation that I am to have next month and so I thought it would be the perfect time for me to get my 2001 SLK320 completely overhauled. So with great help from my friends and family let the work begin!

ENGINE: completely rebuilt cylinder heads that have been ported and polished along with throttle body, inlet manifold and exhaust manifold. ”Needswings” dual cold air intake, magna flow full stainless exhaust system with de cat pipe, new timing chain and all new components (water pump, thermostat, air mass, etc etc).

Suspension: Bilstein 30mm lowered suspension kit, power flex poly bushes, AMG anti roll bars

Brakes: D2 front and rear BIG brake conversion, new handbrake shoes, cables, sensors and performance brake pipes.

Interior: Seats and door cards re trimmed in black and red leather with quilted diamond pattern along with new Bluetooth head unit and upgraded speakers with sound deadening.

Exterior: full re spray in the original Red with several extra coats of lacquer for optimum shine (mirror like), all arches, seals and underbelly fully waxoyled, new grill, headlights, rear led lights and badges. Along with a new set of 18” wheels (undecided which ones yet).

I have nearly all the parts needed for the work to get underway. However some items are coming from across the pond and others will need to be sent away.

I will do my very best to get as many pictures of the build process as I can, however I can’t do myself so I’ll be constantly reminding everyone for updates.

Once I’m fully recovered me and the car will be ready for the summer 2020! I hope you all enjoy the completed product and will be back with updates soon.

Hi,

Good luck with the Back Op I hope it all goes really well :)

Looking forward to updates on this one, a Tuned V6, and in UK, nice one I thought I was the only "Hot Rodder" left ;)

You hadn't considered an M113 then

If the stock (MB not pattern) Rear Silencer that you are taking off is any good and you want to sell it I'd be happy to buy for another project car of mine, they just sound so good without intruding resonance :)
PM me if so ;)

Keep us posted,

Cheers Dave

Ok so I thought I’d give everyone a quick update. Originally as you all know, the plan was for my SLK320 to be stripped get the heads tuned and modified and upgrade all the brakes and suspension with custom interior.

But After talking to the garage late last week and having time to think over the weekend. I have now decided to get my SLK320 restored back to its original concours condition with just a few subtle changes.

And before you all start thinking I’ve lost my bottle or it’s boring and not as fun etc etc. I have decided to do this because whilst I’m having the SLK restored I am also going to be working out the plans and sourcing parts to build my second project which will begin later this year.

So the second project (provisionally) will be to get the engine from the Mercedes AMG GT 4.0L (M178) twin turbo V8 into a (second) R170 SLK.

Getting it to fit along with the 7 speed box is going to be extremely tricky, timely and expensive. Once fitted we then have to get it all up and running but the end result (if we make it to the end) will be a 18 year old convertible with 469bhp on tap!

However if i decide that this isn’t going to work and have to many issues to work out then I do have a couple other ideas. Either way I will keep you updated with all my decisions and progress with both cars
