Maybe these have already been covered but my search skills might be a bit foggy.

Okay, SLK230-R170, 2002, Central locking.

1.Locks are vacuum operated right?
2.Dashboard switch does as it should, opens and closes door and trunk locks.
3.Door opener unlocks doors and trunk.
4.Remote on key fob does nothing, lock or unlock. Batteries checked and led flashes twice on pressing and comes on for about a second if button is held in (battery check).

5.Is the signal from the remote to the car infra-red or radio?
6.Where is the receiver located? Part number?

7.Do the doors/trunk lock from something other than vacuum when operated from the dash? How?

Thanks in advance for any and all answers and information.

Okay, SLK230-R170, 2002, Central locking.

1.Locks are vacuum operated right?

Yes they are vacuum operated.

2.Dashboard switch does as it should, opens and closes door and trunk locks.

This is good. Indicates the basic locking system is working.

3.Door opener unlocks doors and trunk.

Again, this is good.

4.Remote on key fob does nothing, lock or unlock. Batteries checked and led flashes twice on pressing and comes on for about a second if button is held in (battery check).

Mine did exactly the same thing. I finally got upset enough with having to lock/unlock the doors with the key that I went to a good automotive locksmith and had my remote tested just last week. They will have a device, probably right on the counter that will light up if the remote is putting out a signal. If, as I suspect, there is no signal, then you'll have to go to your friendly MB dealer and get a replacement key fob since there are no locksmiths who have the ability to re-code a replacement fob. The only good news here is that the key fob isn't that expensive (relatively speaking). Mine only cost $187+tax and the dealer had it the next day. And this particular fob doesn't have to be programmed by the dealer. It works right out of the box. At least mine did and the parts guy said it is rare for these to need programming at the dealership.

5.Is the signal from the remote to the car infra-red or radio?

Radio frequency.

6.Where is the receiver located? Part number?

I believe it is behind the speedometer. I don't have a part number.

7.Do the doors/trunk lock from something other than vacuum when operated from the dash?

No they don't, vacuum rules here.

Thanks in advance for any and all answers and information.

Hello All,

New to the forum but this Q&A is appealing. My situation is very similar to this post however difference with me is I have zero option to lock and unlock period. Except manually with the key of course. BTW I have the 2000 SLK230.

Remote doesn't work although when I press lock or unlock I get the lights flash on the car? The button on dash doesn't work at all plus a few other things but I have to manually push the locks down.

What do you think? Key FOB? Boy can I get that lucky?
