DaimlerChrysler AG will sell 80.1 percent of its money-losing Chrysler Group to private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management LP for $7.4 billion, the company announced Monday, undoing a 1998 merger aimed at creating a global auto giant.

The German-American automaker said in a statement that an affiliate of Cerberus will hold the majority stake in a new Chrysler Holding LLC while DaimlerChrysler will keep a 19.9 percent stake.

Mercedes = Quality once again, look for the sig sticker.

I did find it interesting that the windshield sticker in the passenger corner on the 07 SLK has the "signature" that I see on my 1993 400e. But the 2006 E350 has an "old script" font that just says "mercedes."

I like the signature, because it signifies to me that Mercedes wouldn't put their signature to it unless they were satisfied that it was built properly. I don't put my signature to anything, especially crap.

The 1993 400e is still superior to the 2006 E350. That 4.2l V-8 may not be quick off the line, but it sure passes road slugs faster. The build qulity and solidity between the two is very apparent. So this is where the signature plays that key role to me.

To see that the SLK has the signature makes sense. The SLK feels solid like the 400e. If you catch a glimpse of the hinges on the SLK doors... those are massive!

But if you go to the dealer and look at the 2007 CLS models, there's no signature. The CLS looks okay, but it doesn't make any sense. The back seat is too small for a trip over 100 miles, the front doors are big, but there's limited room for ingress/egress. The boot lid is plastic. I can see why the CLS is not worthy of "the sig sticker."

The SLK, when I made the decision to buy it, just feels engineered to the hilt. I don't think they really could improve upon what they have here, unless they want to tweak the handling.

The new C class should be very impressive when it hits the states. I just hope that it doesn't appear all over the place like a BMW 3-series.

The new Chryslers that are out are based on those old MB platforms, so at least they are somewhat engineered. But Chrysler can't duplicate the quality that MB did introduce into their cars. My only hope is that Chrysler doesn't re-invent another freakin minivan, or PT Cruiser. That would be hopeless.

If anything, I forsee the new Chrysler group being bought by Ford. The former BMW chairman (now at Ford), would probably benefit from buying that Chrysler (old MB) R&D department. Ford needs a Chrysler 300, and the only way Ford can pull it off is to buy intelligence.

The slk feels engineered to the hilt and the cls does not, according to stickers??? LOL
I can see what he is saying and to be honest i tend to agree.

The car has to be worthy of the name and some modern MB's make the grade others do not.

I hate the CLS also i don't see the point of it why a sedan that looks like a coupe? you want one or the other.

Just one thing in2dwww, The hinges are massive i agree but because they have no check-strap they go out of line very easy when opened to max i always use the first stopper to get in and out.

It's just a sticker  Not all SLKs have them, mine doesn't, and a I collected it personally from the factory. My E Class does have the sticker, and that's needed quite a few repairs over the last couple of years. Assuming the sticker has any significance whatsoever is the wackiest suggestion I've heard for a while.

I am glad. I hate the association with Chrysler. A month ago a Chrysler dealership advertised a special on their Crossfires and said something to the effect:

"These cars are Mercedes Benz. The only American thing about them is their name."

I hate that!

I don't understand the animosity against SRT? I like their products, their quality could be improved, but it's better than the standard US car, and for the money, how can you complain?

That SRT6 crap was a 32amg r170 body same engine runng gear etc as a SLK 32amg --- our cars are great but to slam the other guy --- not fun
Yeah true but the fact that they simply copied the 32 is the issue.

Why bother you know? Why not use the money to help fund another project something new not just a copied AMG
