MB AMG has announced its plans for the incoming 2018 Los Angeles motor show, headlined by a new, hardcore version of the GT called the GT R PRO. The new GT R PRO will also coincide with a range-wide update of the AMG GT, which is likely to include subtle styling and tech changes to bring the two-seater coupe closer into line with the new AMG GT 4-door.
The limited-edition GT R PRO has already been spotted lapping the Nurburgring having sprouted various aero updates, but this is the first time we have heard confirmation as to what it’ll be called. Using the already potent Mercedes-AMG GT R as a base, AMG has applied the lessons learnt from its GT3 and GT4 racing programs, building on the aero package to increase downforce.
As suggested previously by AMG boss Tobias Moers, the AMG GT R PRO will probably bring with it a reduction in overall weight and an increase in downforce. Much like the Weissach package on a Porsche 911 GT3 RS, the PRO model is expected to bring added focus to the GT R, rather than change its character.
