Hi,

Problem with my V8 R170 Conversion Cooling Fan Wiring ...............

I need to know what colour wire represents what for a 2001 model year S500 VIN WDB2200752A263527 on Cooling Suction Fan Plug

The R170 has 4 wires to it's Fan Controller as does the W220 S500 the thick 2 are same colours as the V8 W220 Fan Harness and Plug that I'm using, I need to splice this lead into the old V6 R170 Fan Wiring ...............

Thick Brown = Earth
Thick Black = 50 Amp 12V Permanent +ve ...............

Both the same on the Wiring to the W220 Fan Plug / Harness, so that bit is easy, but now I'm stuck ...............

Each Car then also has 2 thinner Wires ...............

R170 V6 has ...................

Grey = PWM Signal from ME2.8 ECU

Pink / Red = Ckt 15 +ve

But here's where I'm stumped ...............

W220 V8 has ..............

Yellow / Blue = ?

Black / Purple = ?


They are both the same function (Ckt 15 and PWM), but I simply can't find out which one does which right now :cry: .................

I cannot find the Wiring Diagram for the Cooling Fan Plug on W220 S500 2002 year in WIS, have been searching it for over an hour, my Mitchells is down, it's there in WIS somewhere but I don't know where :(

If i get 'em wrong i'll blow the Fan Controller :(

Can anyone help please ?

W220 V8 has ..............

The enigine is M113? Manufacture date of the before or after August 31, 2002?

What's the exact date of manufacture? There is another wiring change 06/01... I know nothing about the W220... the diagrams show K40/7 (a relay module?) and F1/1 (a fuse box?) as an "all in one" part, can you confirm?

It looks like:

yellow/blue goes to K40/7 conn C1 Pin 4, then out via conn MR2 Pin 2; Then on to M3/10 (ME) conn 4 pin 39. The diagnostics for M3/10 show it as a 10Hz PWM signal.

black/violet goes to F1/1 conn L21 pin 2, and then on to fuse F48, labelled "15 (Res)". Tracing it back and looking at the diagnostics confirms it's switched battery.

Yes, that too is what I see too, but manu date does seem to be an issue.

I only have the R170 diagrams so I'll have to go hunt out the W220.

I may be some time... But I'll look.

(you're probably there before me but...)
It might also depend on where the controller is in relation to the fan motor? Some are outbound, some are built into the fan motor.

There's a Benzworld link there which has reference to a PDF for a W204 C-class. The inference is that the wiring is similar to that of the W220. Worth a cautious shot perhaps @Dave2302 ?

The Donor Car, from whence the lower part of the cooling Fan Loom came is 29/10/2001 build ;)

I packed up at 7pm last night, so have just come across all this this morning, what a great gift and shows the power of this Forum :)

Great info as always and yes you were all spot on the money, an MB Specialist buddy in the USA also Emailed me the Mitchells overnight, and sods law, I was able to log onto Mitchells this morning too, I've posted the 2 diagrams below, and in my Project SLK thread too, just in case anyone else is mad enough and actually gets this far with an R170 RHD "Factory Build Quality" V8 Conversion :D :D :D .....................

W220 Wire Colours are indeed :-

Yellow / Blue = PWM Signal Line

Black / Violet = Ckt 15 +ve

:D:D:D:D:D

Also worthy of note, which I had worked out anyway, SLK 320 R170 has a 450W Fan with a 50 Amp Mega Fuse in it's Pre Fuse Box, for it's main Power Cable, the W220 uses 600W Fan and a 60A main fuse, I will have to upgrade that at the same time ;)

The Actual Fan I'm using is a 600W Temic CLK / C Class item with built in Fan Controller, (it was the slimmest one I could find), of course I didn't get the Wiring or Plug with it.

The Plug and Wiring is the same as the W220 S500 , so I stripped the Wiring and Plug out of the Donor Cars Loom, and have now integrated it into the SLK Loom that job is now finished.

So now need to upgrade the Mega Fuse, lol where the hell do you find one of those when the UK is in total lockdown ................

On a hunch I went and stripped the Pre Fuse Box (under the right side foot-well carpet) from the W220 Donor a few minutes ago, and lo and behold, same design Mega Fuse but 60 Amp :) ....



I've just installed that in the R170's Pre Fuse Box, so Coffee time, then mass clear up and get out the SDS for a play ;)

I'll continue over on my SLK 320 to SLK 500 Project thread now :)

Once again, a BIG Thank You to all who helped out with this ;)

the R170 uses 10,0 mm wire vs W220 using larger 12,0 wire... of course it won't melt/combust until you're at highway speed

It won't melt or combust because I actually used the W220 "Main Power" Cable all the way to the R170's Pre Fuse Box, and the W220 Main Earth Lead back to the standard R170 Earthing Point ;) The only ones I joined were the two lightweight Ckt 15 and PWM Wires ;)
