Hi Everyone,

I am in the process of purchasing my first non-VW in 37 years -- a 1979 Fiat Brava in 1982. My wife's last non-VW purchase was a new Mazda RX-7 in 1984. We met in '86 and later that spring I bought a new Jetta GLI. We got married the following year. The year after that, we discovered a VW specialty shop that was the gold standard for repair and maintenance facilities. The GLI stayed with us for more than 16 years and 250k miles. Because of the shop, we bought VWs. The next VW was an '85 Vanagon to replace the RX-7 was our family grew.

The success we had with VWs and this shop led to an enthusiasm for VWs. We have also owned since getting married:
1981 (Rabbit) Pickup LX
1993 EuroVan (poptop) Westy MV
2002 Cabrio GLX
2002 Golf GLS TDI (still own since new)
1971 Super Beetle (aka 1302, German Looker)
1997 Jetta GT
2002 Passat
2009 Eos Komfort
1974 Acapulco Thing (aka 181)
2013 Tiguan S (still own since new)
2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion (still own)
2003 New Beetle Turbo S (for sale)

The shop we went to for 30 years is no longer owned by the chap it's named after. It is also nowhere near the gold standard it once was. The shop we now go to works on other brands.

I always wanted a convertible. I was talked out of it as a teenager while owning a few Fords. The Fiat Brava was something I stumbled into when looking at a Fiat X-1/9 while shopping for those and Porsche 914s. I finally got my first drop top in the wake of Nine-Eleven. Not quite eight years later, Eos replaced Cabrio.

The first Tiguan was a graduation present for our daughter. We borrowed it enough that we decided we should have one for our own -- especially since EuroVan and Vanagon were distant memories. The second Tiguan replaced Eos. I still had a convertible with Thing but not having a reliable shop for it meant I was driving it less and storage costs were escalating. It was sold in the spring.

Turbo S has been a great commuter. It offers nice performance with its chipped Audi engine or great MPGs depending on how I choose to drive. Alas, it's just not a convertible. That may be my only complaint but it's enough of a complaint for me.

Getting another Eos or Cabrio crossed my mind but no longer needing to be tied to VWs has expanded my search. The SLK fits the bill nicely. I am most likely interested in a 2008-11 SLK 280, 300 or 350. I want either a manual transmission or paddle shifters. I wouldn't rule out 2005-07 model years because I like that body style, and I wouldn't rule out 2012-forward because they are newer.

So, the search is on ... and that's how I found this site. My knowledge with Mercedes is very limited but I hope that will change as it did with VW.

Holy cow! What a lot of nice replies and a diaper load of info. I was going to ask what is an R171 -- yes, I would have searched first! -- but I'm guessing it must be Mercedes' designation for the middle of three generations of SLK. Really cool to get responses from all over the globe. That's rare in most of the VW communities since VW tends to target each market differently. I will be hitting the embedded links tomorrow while Beetle is getting detailed for sale. Talk to everyone soon. Cheers!

The SLK fits the bill (of what I am looking to buy) nicely.

The search has narrowed and expanded at the same time.

Due to most sellers not knowing their engine numbers, my search pattern has narrowed to 2009-11 when looking at 6-cylinders. That effectively means no more searching for an SLK 280.

Sometimes I include the R 172 SLKs in my search although most 6-cylinder SLKs are currently outside my financial reach as I refuse to make payments. (I have nothing against 4-cylinder models, per se, except it hits too close to my past with my VW Eos. I want to put as much distance between my next car and any previous cars as I can.)

Through some encouraging promotional advice here, I have included 2007-11 SLK 55 to the search. 2005-06 models don't have paddles and I got a headache searching the feasibility of adding paddles to my previous searches that were incomplete when I stumbled upon buttons. My conclusion for me: No buttons. No conversion to paddles.

Although I have come across a 55 or two without the air scarf or the head unit I want, most have everything I want. Unfortunately, they are outside my self-imposed cash only policy range. There is one that isn't, however. That has led me to two questions ...

(1) Should I be spooked about a 55 that has 110,000 miles on it? It's at a dealer so I'm guessing they don't have the service history.

(2) Should I be spooked about regular maintenance and repair costs on a 55 as compared to a 300 or 350? I have a separate pile of cash for maintenance and such (the piles are theoretical but the amounts are real).

I have to think labor (labour) costs on the 8-cylinder are going to be more imposing given the likeliness there is less room to operate in the engine bay. Anyway, I know there are threads to be read and I will get to them, but I get lost in DIY advice that does me no good or tangents that take me away from my quests.

Oh, and yes, I will eventually get AutoCheck so I can see the records of specific cars. I'm still in the learning stage so my questions are generic. Once I start having a laser focus on one or more SLK, I will get their 25-car 1-month subscription. (The SLK 280 I originally wanted is still for sale. I would pursue it if a pre-emptive fix were available for under US$2,000.)

Thanks in advance. 0:)

My 09 55 has 113000 miles on it. Bulletproof.

reg maintenance you can do yourself...see the maintenance thread for A n B service prices, etc

55 likes to seep valve cover gaskets once in a while. had mine done twice in 11 years
rear main seal like to leak also. you won't notice cause there is a pan over it
had mine done twice. once under warranty, once not

enjoy my threads and albums with 55. get your juices flowing

Since you are interested in a 55, these might interest you
