2005 SLK 350 failed Emissions due to computer monitors not being turned on. I guess MB feels that if the monitors are not on the car won't show any faults. Anyway had to have MB reprogram the chip. The dealer and MB USA agreeded this was MA's fault for changing the program used to inspect for emissions. Bottom line.. $326.15 to the dealer so the car could pass the yearly emissions. Anyone else have this problem? Am I wrong for feeling really screwed?

We bought the car used, this is the 3rd inspection. Until this year MA inspected Emissions every other year and mechanicals every year. This year they (MA) changed the programing of the inspection equipment when they discovered some imported autos were not allowing full access to the monitoring programs installed in the cars. The MA system was changed to detect these barriers and report their existence. The inspectors told me that MB 2004-2008 was almost always sent their way. They also told me that an imported Ford they caught had its chip re flashed (Teck talk) by ford for $50. My cost was for 45min labor. But, I did get a free car wash and vacuum, I could have had the car detailed for less.

That's certainly unusual, I wonder if your ECU was re-programmed. Did your inspector provide a written report that indicated which readiness indicator was not present?

It looks like MA looks for up to 11:

I feel sorry for folks that have to go through state inspections as they are mainly BS. My Wife and I are currently stationed in Texas and they also require inspections.

The two vehicles I purchased when I got out here to TX both require yearly "State Inspections" and it's honestly a joke here. You take it to a "certified" sticker installer. They verify you have headlights and 4 blown up wheels and you fork over $15 a vehicle. Pissed me off.

My SLK is still registered to FL and I am happy to say I don't have to put up with any of that garbage. :)
