Hi Guys and Gals,

New to this site, been researching SLKs for a while.

Looking to buy in January (but not in a hurry) ideally I would like a 320 but would be very happy with a 230. I want to spend up to around 6k ish. I want a low mileage with full history, silver or linnette blue with full black heated leather, would prefer the AMG wheels as well.

I have a few questions if anyone would be kind enough to assist.

1. I understand the windows are supposed to move when the roof operates?

2. Everyone has advised that I go for an auto, I've seen some advertised with tiptronic, I'm guessing that its simular to audi where you can move the gear shift over and you then have an up and down kinda manual shift, is this the case?

2a. I've been told that the autos sit a quite high revs when motorway cruising, can anyone advise?

2b. Are the manuals that bad?

3. I dont mind what year I get if it meets the above criteria but is there a better year to buy, I understand production moved from Germany some time late inthe 90's then the build quality issues started, any advise?

4. What else can I check when I go to look at cars? Anything thats usually an issue?

Thanks in advance for answering my questions

Hi Guys and Gals,

New to this site, been researching SLKs for a while.

Looking to buy in January (but not in a hurry) ideally I would like a 320 but would be very happy with a 230. I want to spend up to around 6k ish. I want a low mileage with full history, silver or linnette blue with full black heated leather, would prefer the AMG wheels as well. First model year for the US was '98 and only the 230 w/ manual was available. Here's a link to help you understand how the R170 evolved. http://consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.com/1998-to-2004-mercedes-benz-slk-6.htm

I have a few questions if anyone would be kind enough to assist.

1. I understand the windows are supposed to move when the roof operates? The windows (large and small) will lower while the trunk tilts open. But if you're asking about them dropping slightly as you pull the door handle, that does not happen on the R170, only the R171.

2. Everyone has advised that I go for an auto, I've seen some advertised with tiptronic, I'm guessing that its simular to audi where you can move the gear shift over and you then have an up and down kinda manual shift, is this the case? The Tiptronic is sort of as you described. You have the normal P, R, N & D on the right. Slide the shifter to the left from D and you have 4, 3, 2 & 1 with D being the 5th gear.

2a. I've been told that the autos sit a quite high revs when motorway cruising, can anyone advise? It would certainly be nice if there were a 6th gear when driving at higher speeds, especially here in Germany, but at normal US cruising speeds, the tach will be around 2500 - 3000 rpms which is really quite optimal.

2b. Are the manuals that bad? Personally, I'm biased as I have an automatic. I like it because I get the best of both worlds. Shifting when I feel like running thru gears, and auto when I'm stuck in stop and go traffic or am just too lazy to shift. No options with the manual...you shift or stay home...lol

3. I dont mind what year I get if it meets the above criteria but is there a better year to buy, I understand production moved from Germany some time late inthe 90's then the build quality issues started, any advise? All years have their quirks. If you do a search in the R170 section, I believe you'll find a sticky or 2 that list some of them for the years. And hopefully someone will chime in with some additional info.

4. What else can I check when I go to look at cars? Anything thats usually an issue? Same as #3.

Thanks in advance for answering my questions
Hope this helps some. Look forward to hearing of your progress in your search!

Hi, and a welcome from Norway

The Face Lift manuals (after feb 2000) got the 6th gear.

I'll just chime in here to say welcome, and echo what those before me have said. I own a 2001 320. Very few problems. If you have more questions about specifics, I'd be happy to try and answer.

PS Add your location to your profile, as sometimes the answer depends on where you live. Different specs for different countries...

welcome as well...

good advice, you need to put your location/country in your profile haha...

For 6K??? you won't even get an slk with 200.000 miles lol

but I assume when you said 6K you probabaly meant pounds ey and not dollars ;-)

230 is good as far gas milage goes and they have a very stable and not complicated engine.

320 is basically the exact same,as far look goes, inside and out...but sure a better stronger engine...

I was looking for my slk 230 for like 5 months and finally found one...and the one i found was literally in perfect conditions,an I had it inspected by MB before purchase, and did not have one single issue...
I got a 2001 slk230
