The 320 engines are fairly reliable, CEL usually caused by faulty electrics, usual fault codes relate to,
Secondary air,
Camshaft sensor,
Crankshaft sensor,
Missfire, random or a specific cylinder and plug.
The K40 relay can also cause CEL to come on.
Try and get a list of the fault codes then look up on the OBD2 website.
There are a lot of faults that do not cause the CEL to come on so there may be quite a list stored in the ECU.
Welcome to the forum from South Yorkshire.
Regards Stuart.

I'd have some concern with a CEL unless the price was very very good. In Calif its the sellers responsibility to make the car pass a smog check, with the caveats that a registered non operational doesn't need one, and if it won't pass a smog check the main recourse is to get your money back and not buy it.

My experience is that turning off the CEL is easy, any cheap scanner should do a reset, but it still won't pass smog check until all the subsystems test internally as good and that can take 50 miles of driving for some.

I use a few scanners, cheap wired unit, $400 wired fancy just for Ford unit, and a bluetooth that works with my Android phone and various software packages. Depending on your mechanical expertise the cheap one may give you codes you can look up and figure out what to fix, but it may not locate the specific part in a system that is bad. Generally the more expensive the scanner the more it walks you through needed repairs and performs additional "factory type" tests to narrow problems.
