Hey everyone, I've been a long time lurker and first time poster now! This site has given me a wealth of knowledge in owning my SLK. My SLK has about 72k miles on it and I bought it around 59k miles. I have never taken it in for a service (I do my own oil changes) and I am hearing a really odd sound. I have tried to explain it over at Benzworld but we couldn't figure out what it was.

I am wondering if there would be anyone that knows these cars inside out who would take a drive with me and let me know if the sound is indeed a problem. I don't want to take it to a tech and have them charge me an arm and a leg just to tell me nothing is wrong with the car. I am a little tight on funds at the moment but want to make sure my gf is completely safe while driving it. If there are any problems I will for sure fix it I just want to see if anyone can help me out before I take it to a Mercedes shop.

Thanks! I am in Anaheim Hills and can drive to you.

Matt

Perhaps join us at the Go-Kart meet on June 5th. Todd and Bill (SantaMonicaSLK32) may be able to check your ride out.

Stop by the go cart event for sure, even if you get your odd sound problem fixed before then.

There are certainly guys better at mechanicals and diagonostics than I am, but I have an SLK32, so the engine minus the supercharger/intercooler and some extra pulleys is fairly similar. I would be glad to take a listen to your engine, and I am sure others will be glad to help out too.

I looked on Benzworld a bit to find more background info on your odd sounds and couldn't find the thread. Could you link to the thread or supply a little background info here? Do you have a youtube video or similar that gives an example of the odd sound you are hearing?

Let me know if you're going on the 5th and still have the problem. If so, I'll bring my stethoscope, code reader and laptop.

Wow! I love this forum. You guys/gals are awesome and extremely helpful. Here is the link to the Benzworld post: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r170-slk-class/1493510-2001-slk320-grinding-metallic-noise-rear.html

Here is the first post:
" 2001 SLK320 grinding metallic noise in the rear (or front?) on minimal acceleration
Hey all, I have been on the forum most of the day trying to figure out this problem and I am still unsure. I read that it could be something to deal with the cam etc.

Here's my issue, this only happens under LOW acceleration...pulling from a red light for example...around what seems to be 2300 to 2600 rpms. At this point it sounds like a metallic grinding noise, and it goes higher in frequency/tone if I keep accelerating at the same rate and then goes away at around 2600. If when I hear the sound I then push the accelerator in even SLIGHTLY, the noise goes away.

It sounds like the noise is coming from the rear, but this car is so small that it could be coming from the front/engine that I don't realize it.

Any ideas? Thanks for any help. It's a 2001 SLK320. Loving it so far.

I have found that I can "exaggerate" the sound when I am going up hill and am going around 45 with the throttle hardly pushed...so the engine is trying a little harder to stay at 45 but I think it's in 4th gear. The sound is then audible for longer then a second...more like 4 seconds or so.

I have tried to film it but haven't been able to catch the sound clearly

PS: I can't wait to see your SLK32. That is my dream car. Thanks again for all this help and I will definitely make it on the 5th!

Thanks for the help and concern! I will definitely make it on the 5th. Keeping my eye out on the thread.
