Hi all.
Already gained some really great stuff in this forum..
I'm looking to purchase an SLK55 AMG in the UK.
Should not having Nav out me off?
She's done 68k and only around 3k over the last 4 years....
Book is "virtually" up to date with one or 2 missing, but she's done next to no miles during the missing ones.
All 16 sparks have been done (£200 - does that even sound right)?, good breaks and gearbox serviced at 26k, so due again now.
Here's a link.
Can you tell me what you all think please before I set off tomorrow to view?
I have absolutely loads of info on what to look for, Roof, Subframe, breaks, Cam seals, wet floors, Aircon/heater matrix, gearbox in all settings, start from cold etc etc.
Be interesting to hear your thoughts though.

Thanks in advance.

So, an '05 should be cheaper VED (which is what they list). around the '55 plate it went up to currently the £600 mark.
Not got SP30 performance package, some find the ride harsh when it has.

Have you driven it? Some find the stiffer 55 suspension too harsh and prefer the softer 350.

Early models all had six pot front brakes. Great stopping power, but you may want to price rotor and pad work with a local garage so that you are aware.

Those mpg figures are a reasonable guide.
Allow for 20mpg, depending on how you drive (drive mental and you can get it down below 13 mpg).

Has it had an X pipe fitted? Gives great sound, but some find it too loud, or hear a drone.

Cold start. Sounds like you are on to this, but another reason is the gearbox. Anything 'iffy' will show, notably on the down change, whilst cold.

Make sure to do this before test driving:

Although a PITA, make sure to check all buttons (looks like you will), especially on that central dash. The cup holders are above and you can guess where any leakage goes.

You look aware of the rear subframe issue hitting some 171s. Need it on a ramp ideally as it rots inside out but is sometime more visible from above.

Cam covers are cheap to fix.

Rear Main Seal. Hard to see, but try and look for oil.

Roof. Be vigilant. Repairs can range from minor and free/little money all the way to money pit.

Check all 3 gearbox modes and tappy paddles/buttons.

Check AC works properly. Often simple fix, but occasionally costs.

Worth taking a scanner (ideally an SDS version, but at least a decent one) and check for codes.

Watch for signs of the pink shrimp:
Search results for query: pink shrimp

Now...No SatNav? Don't worry as it is one of the worst I ever had. Much better to use Waze, Google etc from your phone.

Look for vibration felt through the steering. Can be engine mounts.

From your post, you sound switched on and clued up. Probably most of the above is just confirming what you have already learnt.

Also, don't worry about the head unit, wether it have GPS or not. It's utter crap, even on the latest models - even "My Guy" who's a MB specialist (he fixed the A/C for me a few months ago, where several others had failed) say it's crap. Even on the very latest!

I retrofited a Chinese head unit myself a few months ago. Took a day (well, one day to figure out exactly what wiring loom to use for my specific car and specs and one day to do the actuall fitting) and it's .. "mostly working OK". WAY better than the original in any case..

I'd recommend sending out a guy from ClickMechanic. I did, on my SLK55/2010.
It's about £180, but they're professionals and they check it from top to bottom and report EVERYTHING! Could potentially save you bundle if you're unlucky (lucky??).
Was that the chap with an MB background?

No, that's "My Guy" in Bristol. He have a MB work shop there. No, ClickMechanic is former brand mechanics (in this case, MB specialists) that work as a .. "vehicle checkers". They go out, all day, and look at vehicles for other people. Like me, who's not that good at making good deals and find all the hidden issues :).

As for the price, I'd say that's about average. It's not low but it's not high either for that model and year. And don't worry so much about the "high" milage.. 68k isn't that much for that engine and gearbox!

Mine's five years newer, but have done 10k more :).

Looks pretty good to me...

As already mentioned, o/e brakes are expensive and at 68k, likely recently done, or need doing. If the latter, it's your best lever for getting a grand off the price. Front discs are 32mm new and 30mm min service thickness. so a lip of <1mm tells you all you need to know.
From a cold start (make sure you tell the seller you want it stone cold), the blower for the cats pre-heat is a bit noisy but should quieten after about a minute. Valve gear, cam chain components, water pump and pulleys should be quiet too. Keys are abt £250 - and you will need two. Might also be worth making sure the emergency blade will open the door/boot (but don't force it if it's reluctant)

Before you start, check the OBD for oil level and battery voltage. The engine should crank briskly and start immediately. without voltage dropping below abt 10v.

Check the aircon is working and blower is quiet. On early models, the red LED warning light on the button means the a/c is OFF.

Check heaters in both seats - prone to failure.

Roof cycle should take 22 seconds, quietly and smoothly.

The only thing that would slightly worry me are the periods of inactivity. These cars hate sitting doing nothing. Check everything at least twice.

How have you come to like (or dislike) that head unit? I was looking at a "stock" appearing replacement as well as a large touch screen with the cupholder delete to make room for the larger setup, and the cost is hard to turn my nose up at, and if it works at ALL better than the standard Comand unit I'd be elated.

Because it’s ANCIENT!!

It was probably made in the (very!) early 2000.. Technology the last 15-20 years have simply made it unusable..

I had HOPED it would be modern enough, but last map update was 2018 and they’re not going to do another.

I bought a cheap Head Unit from China (Seicane) for $350. Android 10. It’s not without its own problems, but at least I drive on a road, not in the middle of a field.. According to the GPS that is :D :D

I’m also in the process of connecting a rear cam to it (tread elsewhere) and next step is to put one in the front as well.
I’ll use them as dash cams (front and rear).

I also got a 4G dongle with it, so I always have Internet for the apps. Don’t have to use up valuable battery on my iPhone :).

With some extra apps (Rays Radar detector - $8/year), I have camera warnings in real time.

With Torque and a OBDII adapter, I can log all data (temps, revs, speed etc etc) on a drive in real time. That’s uploaded to the Torque site so I can review it at home.

What really grinds my bones is the way they botched the CAN feed! Steering wheel buttons work fine. Only problem is that they ALWAYS work!! All the time!

As in, I don’t get any audio or navigation info in the display in the dash (annoying in itself), so HU doesn’t ”disconnect” the buttons when I’m not in the audio display. So navigating the menus in the dash is a pain. Either accept that I change track and/or volume while getting to the menu selection I wanted. OR turn the HU off temporarily..

I DO NOT inderstand why car manufacturers wants to try to reinvent the wheel EVERY SINGLE TIME instead of relying on experts that know what they’re doing!!

Android IS the only way to do it right!!

I have an iPhone and a Sony head unit - and the HK audio upgrade speakers/amp - my steering wheel buttons only work with my head unit - when I'm in a menu - they do what they should in that menu.

Apple IS the only way to do it right!! :)cool:)

And to the OP - if you're looking at several 55's - there's one near Worcester in red for sale that has a few issues that the owner won't mention that I found when running through the checklist on here. He described it as showroom - I'd describe it as average to middling.

All of the above. Looking good and nice rare interior. My 6 pot disks lasted about 70k and got replacement for about a grand but don't let that put you off. Modern Android headunits are far superior to these early Comands. I saw a similar later car at Goodwood this weekend for £26k. Jump all over it before prices start to rise!

Yeah, ok, fair enough. I also think it's a better choice, but for a HU, I do think Android is better. It's based on an open architecture (i.e. standardised hardware and software), not closed source and hardware that have to be licensed for extortionate sums..

Just poking fun don’t worry :) apple and Android both have their strengths and weaknesses…
