Hi everyone.

Along with many others, I'm searching for my first SLK. I've got an old BMW 530D as my daily drive and an even older Rover 214 as the runabout, but I can't seem to find the switches in either car that folds the roof back into the boot.

Thanks to Google, I've been loitering with intent on the fringes of SLKWorld for a little while as budgets and opportunities allow and I'm now actively looking for an R170 SLK320 to replace the Rover. These look to be an underrated peach of a car and, where available, are very good value, although, as they are quite rare, I may settle for a 230 - or maybe a cheeky R171 SLK280/350 if the budget will stretch....

Let me know where I'm going wrong!! :)

Thanks everyone

A quick question. Apart from the usual issues of rust and the roof mechanism (sounds like a pop group!), what are the big service schedules? I hear that there is a big service every 50,000 miles or so and wonder, if I see a potential car with approx. 45,000 or 95,000 on the clock what would I be expected to have to look forward to?

Hope you can help

Welcome Savcom. 3 weeks ago, I bought an R171 350. For me, the choice of car was also dictated by how much (or little in my case) I wanted to spend on annual maintenance (bye bye to potential Porsche ownership). This forum is great for learning about potential pitfalls with each model of SLK and the service books detail the mileage/age service requirements, you have to match up the usual more recent non MB service invoices to ensure the work has been done. The R170 230 is a good top down car, ultimate power isn't everything and they are a lot cheaper to keep on the road; in this country that engine has been popular across a number of models plus as the single largest selling SLK, secondhand spares are more freely available. Whatever you do choose, it will still be more upmarket and unique than a MX5 and the cars are genuinely liked and commented on by men and women.
Good luck in your search, I'm sure we all look forward to finding out what you end up purchasing.

Amen to that, BecksBlue. I'm setting up two test drives this Saturday - one in an SLK320 and the other an SLK280. It's going to be a busy Saturday as the weather looks none too good for the afternoon so probably no top-down action, more's the pity. We'll see though.

I'm hoping at least to settle the R170/R171 question with these two drives and can then settle down and wait for a suitable car to become available.

Quietly excited, if truth be known.... >:D

Thanks Jeff. I'll spend some time perusing these so I know what I'm looking for / asking about when I haggle.

also get the vins of those cars or any others u are interested in ahead

of time if you can and get your datacards so you know what was/is on it as far as options are concerned.

also on the r171, be aware of 2 issues on early models

http://www.slkworld.com/slk-r171-ge...alance-shaft-sprocket-m272-m273-stickied.html

http://www.slkworld.com/slk-r171-ge...-consumption-engine-ranges-m272-stickied.html

having the engine number from the vin/datacard, you can check the engine ranges and see if it is affected

R170 230k just saying ?
Heh - maybe. But as I have to replace the turbo on the BMW a nice naturally-aspirated V6 sounds a better - and simpler - choice right now.

No offence.

Nice colour, by the way - here's hoping I get one looking as good!

When I'm actually buying that's absolutely what I'll be doing. ;)

Yep! That's the first question I'll be asking on an R171 - if the Balancer Shaft Sprocket has been replaced, and I'd expect to see evidence to back up that the work was done. Would MB have a record what work has been done on a car from its service history and could I check this?

mb would only if serviced at mb. if done at an indy, nope.
also, sellers might not be aware of the balance shaft or oil consumption. they might have been fixed before they bought the car or been taken care of when in for service or not affected. read those threads and though the range is large, it is because mb did not know when the bad items were used or not used.

Good point, JB.

As I'm already looking at the thick end of a £1000 bill for the BMW turbo that does mean I should maybe avoid the chance of a R171 unless I can be sure the work has been done. Perhaps for now an R170 would be a safer choice - unless it's due a big service.

don't rule out the r171 by any means. just be diligent in your search. My previous 2005 SLK 350 was on the shaft list and I purchased it new and never had an issue.

there is a video test in that thread that takes about 15 minutes to test any potential candidates 2005-about 2007 based on engine number

or get a newer year R171. or a 55! they have the M113 engine, not a 272
