hello, i wonder if anyone can help. i have a 1998 slk and my central locking has stopped working with the doors locked and roof up. i don't seem to have any locks on the doors just blanks where the locks should be???
i have replaced the fuse in the boot (uk) even though it hadn't popped and the fob has new batteries. I have managed to open the bonnet and can access the car battery if required
how can i get into my car without breaking anything? any help will be gratefully received. many thanks steve.

Blanks, Check again is it not just a cover that is snapped over the lock. Some had a round plastic cover that snaped over the lock to protect it from weather. Some have had problems with the lock freezing up due to none use over time. Some WD40 sprayed into th lock will free it up.

Once you get it unlocked you should synchronize the remote. Done by aiming the remote eye at car and depressing both the lock and unlock buttons at the same time twice and then inserting the key in the switch with in 30 seconds and tuning it to posistion 2. Make sure you only do this after you are able to get inside the car. Good idea to have second person in side to be able to open the doors if they lock up again while doing this.

Any luck? The central locking system works on a vacuum , there is a small pump that creates that vacuum. The pre facelift models have a known problem the pse , the circuit boards get corroded and cause all kinds of issues. Replacing the fob batteries may not be enough, most times you have to 're program them.

it is a pump that regulates the locks among other things. do a search top right for pse pump

I have no experience with this, but if you can determine which line supplies vacuum to the central locking system from the vacuum pump/tank then you may be able to put a hand or power vacuum pump on that line and get the lock to work. Either that, a coat hanger or a slimjim. Is the battery dead?

View attachment 27468 this is a pic of the handle, same as driver's side?
does this come off?
The driver side should come off some way. See if you can move it a little. The parts book shows as if it snaps off. Can not say for sure how it comes off. It must come off to get to the key slot to unlock the doors if the car battery is dead. Hope someone if a 170 would chime in with better info on removal of lock cover.

tried to send a private message to niel (out on my bike) but haven't got enough posts to do it yet so hope he reads this!!!

I live in Ramsbottom, the car is in my garage at home so at least i'm not getting soaked trying to get into it.
my number is 07714301431 if you like to get in touch and give me a hand that would be great.
Thanks Steve.

Has anyone used the coathanger technique to open a locked slk, or do the skinny bars down the doorseal to the glass?

Thanks again steve.

Car thief's aren't "all that". It's not hard getting into any car really as long as you dont care about the alarm going off. Post up what was causing the problem when you get it all working again! :)

all that was wrong was the fob lost it's synch to the car. i reprogrammed the fob (2 clicks on fob and put key into ignition and turn to position 2) mechanism seems to work fine.
Need to watch it over next few days though.
