Hello from Liverpool England,
After selling my mark 2 Mazda MX5, which was fantastic, but not automatic, (appreciating that buying an auto MX5 is just not the done thing), I have bought an absolutely gorgeous 2009 SLK 280.... (automatic) with 57000 miles on the clock. Maybe took a bit of a chance buying privately but got just the one I wanted, Iridium Silver (is that the dark silver?) with an Ash interior, sat nav and air scarf. Alas no folding mirrors, missed out there.
The car is beautiful and I am really pleased with it.
Only two issues so far and thanks to the posts here I believe I can/have resolve(d) them.
First one, dipped beam bulb out. After messing about for about 4 hours..... to change a light bulb! I believe the quickest and easiest way to this is, front wheel off, wheel arch lining out (completely), change the bulb, dead easy, wheel arch lining back, after a wipe down and a polish, wheel back on. RHS 4 hours LHS 25 minutes..... including polishing the wheel arch, (the side that's in the engine bay, although the other side got a clean too).
Second one.....on day two, after about 270 miles, (London to Liverpool plus a little bit of running about) the engine management light came on, my heart sunk!
Fault code was P0128 Coolant Thermostat. This was borne out by a heater that only blows lukewarm air after 20mins, engine temperature that hardly reaches 75 degrees and fuel consumption that is making my eyes water.
After spending some time here and watching a few YouTube videos I am going to change the thermostat (housing). I have not bought a replacement yet but was going to buy a Wahler Thermostat part number 4834.100D. Any advice in this respect would be appreciated. (Is Wahler the one to go for? it seams to be the consensus here and on other forums).
Absolutely loving the car though, it's November and circa 5 degrees outside on a good day, up to now I seam to be the only one locally driving a convertible with the roof down, except when I am taking my daughter to school......"Dad you are not taking me to school with the roof down, I'm not getting in it". Me, I think it's fantastic.

Hi Michael, and welcome to SLKWorld.com from the UK Midlands - Thanks for joining us and posting an intro! :)

I can't help with the thermostat question... if you don't get any useful responses here, perhaps try posting a new thread in the relevant question, as not everyone looks for techie questions in the intro section.

We have quite a few members in the UK that like to meet up from time to time, although things do get a little quieter during the winter months. If you're interested in joining us sometime, just keep an eye on the UK Region section, as we post meeting plans there! :tu:

Maybe I'm lucky, but Mrs. Savcom insists the roof goes down when the sun's out regardless of temperature.. She's picked up on the comment that the roof mechanism lasts longer the more you use it.

Welcome aboard, by the way and enjoy the top-down motoring.

Hi Michael,
Welcome to the forum. Funny you should say about the dipped beam bulb. I want to change both bulbs on my car as the ones fitted at the moment don't seem very bright especially when the main beam Xenons are the total opposite. I was going to attempt to change them from the top, but reading your comment I think I will bite the bullet and take the wheel off and wheel liner. Fuel consumption wise, I'm getting 30 to 32mpg on a 33 mile drive to work, mainly dual carriageway doing around 65 to 70mph which I'm quite pleased with. I don't use it all the time though...that would be eye-watering.

Hope you soon get the other problem sorted. :)

Welcome from West Sussex UK. Glad you sorted the headlamp out. I replaced the xenons a couple of years ago which was fun & games.. not!

Hello everyone and thanks for the replies and welcome.
I thought I ought to explain why it took 4 hours to change the RHS headlight bulb.
I am going to go out on a limb to suggest that anyone over 5 years old is not going to be able to get their arm in between the back of the head light housing and the wheel arch lining and be able to remove covers, unclip cables and twist the light bulb housing to get to the bulb, and that’s just to get the thing out!
For my first attempt I tried to remove the head light housing completely. Started with the two bolts that you can see from the top, that gave me a bit of movement but the front grill seemed to be restricting any further extraction. So the bolts holding that on came out too. Now with my wife pulling the front trim forward and me manueuvring the head light, yes there was more movement but still the head light is not coming out. Alas there is another bolt holding it in place underneath, back to needing to be under 5 years of age again!
Right, engine on, front wheels on full lock, time to come in at the other end. I took the wheel arch lining fixings out that I could see and with some bending of the lining I can now see the last bolt holding the head light in place, I can get to it and I can undo it by squeezing my arms between the wheel arch and the plastic lining that my wife is now pulling to one side with a bend forming in the middle. (The lining is still in its arch shape so this is very difficult and is not giving me much room). It is at this point that blood is starting to run down my arms from all the cuts I am getting trying to undo the last headlight bolt. But the bolt comes out and now there is nothing holding the headlight in place…..will it come out…..NO.
I am beginning to think that when they begin building the SLK in the factory they start with the headlight.
The headlight will not come out past the wing profile and front grill, even with half of it dismantled.
At this point it is now going dark, you can see where the 4 hours is coming from. The car goes back in the garage with its headlight half hanging out, the wheel arch lining rubbing on the front tyre, oh and now the bonnet won’t close.
Next day, after reading a few more posts on the forum and with my arms bandaged I start the job again.
As my previous post, the wheel comes off, the lining comes out, and you can then get to the back of the entire headlight cluster and change the light bulb, no blood, no sweat and no tears. (My eyes were still a bit red after crying the night before when I saw what I had done to my car).
On a practical side, to remove the wheel arch lining, there are two bolts securing it to the front bumper section, one right at the top of the liner in a recess and two bolts to the inner wing (you can only get to these with the front wheel off), there is then one last bolt fixing the front section of the lining to the back. With all of the fixings removed I started and the bottom of the lining at front bumper and “peeled” the lining out, noting that the front part of the lining tucks underneath the back part of the lining (which stays in place). As with most jobs putting it back was the reverse. Compared to the messing about the day before this was a doddle.
I did check that the new light bulb was working before putting it all back together. I had always intended to change both headlight bulbs, but when I was checking the fist one, there was a noticeable difference between the brightness of the two? So a good call doing both.
As for the bulbs I bought Bosh Pure light 477 H7 car bulbs in a pack of two from Halfords for £19.99. They did offer to fit them for me at £8.00 per bulb! I laughed and thought £8.00 to change a light bulb, how hard can that be!

SWMBO got her bulb changed by our local MB Indy.
The mech entertained us with an ancient chant in an all too familiar tongue whilst he battled for 30+Mins.:surprise:

Was well worth the cost (I already knew it was going to be easier to monocycle blindfolded through the Queensway in rush hour traffic).

The princely sum of 'on the house'.:smile:

I'd played with the sidelight when I first got the car.
I'm used to playing with Japanese bikes.
Still got my arm wedged.
No way was I doing the headlight on hers in the middle of our street.
