I was really quite proud of myself at this point. Everything looked really good, and I was ready to spray my adhesive on to both the backing and the fabric, get things in place, and finish things up.
What you should have done is to have done a couple of tests first and you'd have come to the conclusion that you don't need to apply glue to both the backing and the fabric. When applied direct to the fabric, the upholstery glue can seep into it and turn it into a wet rag, pretty much. Next time, spray the backing only quite liberally with the glue and pay particular notice of the edges, let it go off for 5mins and then place your new fabric over the now-tacky backing. Work from the middle out with a roller and progress to a firm brush as and when you are happy to do so. Leave for 24hrs then trim and finish.
