2006 SLK 350

Tried all of the solutions that Ive found on this an other sites and no luck. Both keys no longer lock/unlock the doors, also no lights, etc when the keys are used. However, the car will start, the inside lock buttons work fine as does everything else that we've tried. Talked to one shop and said that both keys can stop working at the same time which seems a bit odd and suggested getting new keys but thats an expensive "try it" solution. The other option is to replace the module and/or antenna but again an expensive experiment.

Anything else we can try?

Thanks

Tighten the antenna; swap the battery between the 2 remotes; change the batteries?

Agreed, this sounds like a key transmitter problem which points the the car antenna as both keys have stopped at the same time.
Try operating the key while holding it up against the antenna.
As @LeonardoDaBenz said, try removing the antenna by turning the top anti-clockwise and cleaning the connection, otherwise you’ll be looking at the antenna amp that sits inside the rear wing by the base of the antenna, check it‘s connected and has +12v going to it.

Oh .... fit a new battery to the key first, it might just be flat on your main key and the spare has gone flat without your noticing. :)

Tried new batteries in the keys also check their voltage. Is the remote antenna the little stub on the rear above the wheel?

if it is the amp, is it an easy swap or do you need to dismantle lots to get to it?

On your keys there is a small red LED that is supposed to light up when you press the buttons - is it lighting up?

How to see the remote signal:
Turn on your smartphone mobile phone camera.

Direct your remote to the camera.

When you press the remote, the camera.will "see" the infrared signal.
