So my front left hub of my Escalade fell off 2 weeks ago and my friend let me borrow his car. He was in the process of trying to sell it as he just got a new 7 series After essentially test driving it for a few weeks, I have decided to buy it for my commute car. The drivetrain is pretty good as far as I know. Check engine light is on though, but after reading around, I am almost certain that the MAF needs to be cleaned. Could also use basic fluid flushing and replacement, but other then that, the car is running fantastic for 164k miles. Drivetrain gets a B+

Interior is in okay shape. Key hole housing has a crack a few inches below, but none of this affects anything. Passenger side hydraulic line leaked and needs fluid and a new line. Its Cold atm, so I am not really worried about the hardtop yet. Dome light bulbs need replaced. Need to fix the headliner, but would want to fix the leaky line before obviously. Fix the headliner and it gets a B.

What are some things I should look for? Common issues that go out regularly? So far loving the car and its "zippyness". Easy to park, easy to drive, wish it was a manual, but you can't have it all.

Some tips to make your visit here more enjoyable:
  • Post your VIN (or VIN of a car you're looking at) in the Vehicle Datacard Request section to get a free datacard (options on the car).
FREE!! How to get a free data card!
  • If you haven’t, please use the 'search' feature at the top right of the page for your questions as they have probably been asked before. Remember, ‘Search’ is your friend.
  • If you wish to become PM (Private Message) capable, you need 15 posts. To get those 15 posts quickly, just go to the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section and welcome enough new members to obtain your needed posts to PM.
  • Want to post a picture? Start a new thread or make a post, click ‘edit’, click on the ‘paper clip’ or ‘advanced’ and/or ‘manage attachments’ then ‘choose file’ then ‘upload’ and ‘submit’! If iPhone/iPad pics, you can only attach 1 pic per post this way as iOS names its pics all the same, image.jpg.
  • Want to 'like' or 'thank' someone’s comments? Use the ‘like’ button to the right or the ‘Thanks’ button, bottom right of any individual’s post that you like. This saves you having to comment.
  • New members should be aware that the 'New Posts' link in the info bar towards the top of the screen is a great way to see all of the posts you have missed since you were on the forum last. Remember to click 'mark forums read' under ‘quick links’ when you leave.
  • Also vote or enter our Ride of the Month competition: ROTM Submissions & Voting - Mercedes Benz SLK Forum
  • Finally, the Picture of the Day section is guaranteed to have something to make you smile each weekday morning!

Welcome from central Florida. Here are some items I would address if I were making that purchase:

Change differential fluid
Change fuel filter
Change cabin filter
Change engine coolant
Change oil and oil filter
Replace belts, idler pulleys and tensioner pulleys
Change brake fluid
Change power steering fluid
Change air filter
Change spark plugs

This would freshen the car up. In regards to the convertible top, there are 5 hydraulic cylinders that actuate the roof; a locking cylinder that is in the headliner and holds the rood to the windshield, 2 cylinders that tilt the trunk, and the final 2 that fold the roof. The seals in them will eventually fail if that haven't already. There are seal kits on eBay with instructions. You could do the job yourself for less than $40 including fluid. A dealership would quote you thousands. The 2 cylinders that tilt the trunk are a little tricky because you have to drill out some dimples to disassemble them. The other three are held together with a C-clip.

Good luck with the new car. Lots of good folks here with helpful advice to steer you along the way.
