Hi all.

I have just bought an SLK 230K R170 Auto from a neighbour which had been stored in his garage virtually unused for several years. He recently pulled it out of the garage and submitted it for an mot which it failed because of warning lights. He told me that the BAS ESP light has been on for a few years and had passed the mot previously.
He had a local mechanic have a look but he could not fix it so the neighbour offered it to me.

Although low mileage (14000) and really tidy it has no mot, BAS/ESP warning light on, coolant level light on and originally a heap of fault codes which I am slowly trying to work through. With help from a friend some have now been reset but I don't know if any of those have come back since. He was not able to access the body control module so I will try and get that done soon. After he cleared what he could the car still showed:
P2020 Electric fan Engine/AC and C1141 ESP pressure sensor 2 zero point variation.
ESP module has a crack in the cover so I am wondering if someone has tried to get it apart.

Also the roof does not work properly but I was thinking sort the major problems (ESP etc) first and the roof later. In addition some other items do not work....interior light, central locking, stereo. I pulled out the K40 module but could not see any faults with it and it looked perfect although I realise that means nothing. Battery looks almost new, my neighbour has now told me he replaced it but I don't know when, he says he can't remember. It gives 12.6v with ignition off and a shade over 14v running.

Any pointers from anyone in the meantime would be appreciated until I get the car to someone with Star diagnostics.

Many thanks.

Often the faults on the K-40 module aren't clear to the naked eye , have you checked the solder joints with a magnifying glass ?
It may be worth reflowing them any way ...

Regarding the central locking & interior light , do a search for PSE pump and check it for corrosion.

Can't be too much help with the faults but welcome to the club from another 2004 230k owner

BAS/ESP warning light on
Have you tried turning the wheel all the way one way and then all the way the other way. When the system is without power it has to be reset in this manner.

coolant level light on
Well, how's the level?

Also the roof does not work properly but I was thinking sort the major problems (ESP etc) first and the roof later.
Good idea, we will be here to help when you are ready.

Yup, check the PSE.

Bas light

I had a 320 R170 a few years ago the light came on and it turned out to be a faulty lateral accel' sensor located in the centre consol, changed for a second hand one and all fine,

Although could just need driving if it has been standing for a while, get the error codes from the body moduke and that will give you a clue.

Many thanks for the pointers. I have checked the solder joints on the K40 with a magnifying glass and all look fine but I will try a resolder.

Coolant level is fine although I will check the washer fluid

I have turned the steering wheel lock to lock to reset. The BAS ESP light is not lit when the car is first started but comes on after approx 5-10 mph when the brake pedal is used.

I will have a look for the PSE. Car is booked in for STAR diag tomorrow so hopefully I will know more then.

Thanks again.

There should be a float in the coolant reservoir. Is it floating? Mine got stuck down once and I had to get needle nose pliers to pull it up and it has been floating ever since.

My guess is that this sensor is the issue but I have no experience
C1141 ESP pressure sensor 2 zero point variation

Quick update. Diag shows
C1141 ESP pressure sensor 2
P2020 Electric fan Engine/AC
Indie tells me I need new fan control relay/module @ £183.60 and a new brake pressure sensor @ £75.60
Apparently my alarm siren also needs replacing @ £97.20
Also the dome light still does not work.
The coolant level warning light is still on. Indie tells me that might be due to the fan control module fault.
He has fixed vario roof, stereo, and central locking, so far so good :)

Before I go and buy the parts suggested does anyone have any experience of the C1141 code and if so did the pressure sensor cure the fault?

Also could the dome light be affected by the alarm siren?

Lastly is there a way of checking the fan control module?

Many thanks

Yes I had the water level light stay on and it turned out to be the Rad fan. You can check to see if the fan works by turning air con on

So another update.

Got a used master cylinder and servo complete on the basis it would come with the 4 sensors and unlikely that all of them would be faulty. Changed the 2 in the master cylinder to try and remove the pressure sensor fault but fault still there.

Bought a used ESP module and fault now fixed! So be aware that if the diag throws up fault code C1141 ESP pressure sensor 2 zero point variation it might not be the pressure sensor at fault.

Dome light seems to have fixed itself, just started working:smile:

Car now has an MOT so getting there.

One problem I am having trouble getting to the bottom of........I fitted a used fan control module which erased the fault code and switched off the coolant level light however the fans keep running with the engine off even hours later. I have ordered a new fan control module just to be safe but I am not convinced this is the problem.

Any thoughts on what might be the problem please?

Thanks

From what I've read the radiator fan is controlled by a relay in the k40, did you ever re flow the solder joints in it?

The usual symptom is the fan runs continuously any time the key is on - you're saying yours runs even with the key off?

Hi efair and thanks for the reply.

Yes even with the key off and several hours after switching the engine off the fans were still running although slowly.

I did not reflow the solder but I did remove the K40 and it looked perfect. I was going to reflow the joints but the indie told me that it was fine so I did not bother however the new fan control module arrived yesterday and seems to have cured the fault. Fingers crossed!

Just a quick update. The 230 is now on the road, taxed and MOT'd and I have done a few miles in it. Most of the faults are now cured :)

It also had a gearbox oil leak and I had the electrical plug replaced but it still leaked. It turned out to be from the selector shaft seal according to the Indie. Anyway leak now seems to be fixed and the gearbox sump looks dry.

The car is great fun, just a shame the weather is now so horrible here.

Work still to be done when funds allow include replacing the alarm siren, paintwork to the boot lid (some surface rust appearing) and small scuffs on both bumpers, also a refurb of all wheels (I like tidy wheels) as there is some corrosion appearing.

Many thanks to all on the forum for the help and advice. Thanks also to John from Merk-Tech in Farnborough, Hampshire who has fixed most of the problems.
