Hey guys,

So it's gonna be that time again, let's a have a meet to make up for the most likely 'skipped' December meet (for everyone but ETYU, DURK, and Myself).

I propose January 8th as i'll be traveling a bit between now and then and new years and Xmas is always hectic anyhow.

I'm guessing we are gonna have a mini-meet for February as well, since the normal weekend is going to be right before Valentine's day and for the non-lonely drivers that'll assuredly be a busy and expensive time. Also, this will give us time to prep (and save) for the big March Meet.

Proposed Ideas? I want to do Malibu Canyon again for a run or how about ATV-ing?

Other ideas in case of inclement weather:
go karting,
Dyno day.

OT: Any of you into Airsofting? kinda my new hobby...

Good ideas. I'm up for any of those, though not too big on dyno day... does anyone know about any tracks? That could be fun. :)
If we do go karting, how about we find a place where they have gas-powered vehicles?
As for the day, I have a very tight deadline on January 7th and there is a possibility I will have to work that weekend. Otherwise I'm good, but I have no way of knowing this at this point.

Maybe January 15th vs January 8th (to allow recovery from the holidays and going back to routine) ?

Well I'm going to say this: I'm cool with any day, though I think the 15th would be better. In regards to the pending February date, I would have to probably say no, as I'm going to be in Vegas that weekend helping my wife with something. Gonna beg if we can move that meet to another date.

I am up for January 8th or January 15th.

As far as what to do, given how wet this winter is already, and that January is a wet month; it might be smart to have our January meet up as something that has driving as a secondary priority...so...

Up for another GoKart day or dyno day. I think when polled, only 3 of us were up for a dyno day, so maybe we three (Edward, me and ??) should make a separate thread for that.

If we do decide on a drive, many of the Malibu roads we have driven on in the past are freshly repaved, and in great condition! Also, I am up for leading a short or moderate hike in malibu or elsewhere, too as a break from driving all day long. Obviously however, wet days are just as bad for hiking as for driving.

Some cool, short hikes along nice drives are:

1. the Dominator shipwreck 1/3 onshore, 2/3 just offshore in western Palos Verde:

2. Amazing sandstone rock formations, wind caves and an old house burnout at the top of Coral Canyon Malibu:

3. Hiking through malibu creek state park (old movie sets, lodging and great scenery). Also if you DO NOT mind muddy feet, there is a great approximately 30 minute (one way), mostly flat hike to a waterfall and rapids that are stunning during or just after a big rain. I am not sure I want my own muddy feet in my SLK...but we could figure out something with plastic bags and spare shoes to keep mud under control.

I have lead each of these hikes multiple times, so I can nearly promise not to get us lost if we choose to hike.

As has been evident, we have been doing that a lot recently. Are we still planning this cruise out? I'm rather excited for the next one.

I am still very much up for doing a drive on January 8th, or almost any other weekend in January. And I am VERY willing to lead a group hike during the drive, at a location like the top of Coral Canyon. I love Malibu and I know some great hikes there (and no further waterfall searches this year!).

However, Malibu is not central in our socal group, and some members travel from San Diego and the OC to get to the drives, meaning hours to get to Malibu. Since we just drove through Malibu with DaytonaJae, does anyone want to select a drive or activity spot further to the southeast in socal for our January get-together?

With all the rains it sounds definitely like a good idea to do something that's not a canyon carving exercise.

I am going to stay out of the planning of the January meet since there's a chance my SLK will be in the shop during one of those weekends. But if it's ready, I'm sure I'll probably join whatever is organized. I personally have no problems with Malibu. The more I drive it, the shorter it seems! The big exhausting ride was when we used Malibu as a starting point, and then drove almost to Lompoc during the drive part. That was a 15 hour driving marathon for me!! :D

Might be time for someone to just pick the weekend, propose the activity and get a roll-call going.

The recent heavy rains may be a problem for hiking. Since my last post, I have been researching hikes in the OC. At least 2 OC parks with interesting hikes, Laguna Coast Wilderness Park and Limestone Canyon Park, have extended closures as of 12/28/2010 due to storm damage:

A series of wet winter storms caused flooding, downed trees, landslides and muddy conditions, leading to extended closures at some parks while crews clean up.

Wilderness parks and unpaved trails at regional parks remain closed following rain last week and on Christmas day. Some parks, like O’Neill Regional Park and Limestone Canyon and Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park, sustained damage that may lead to longer closures.

County beaches in south Laguna are also closed. More rain is expected on Wednesday.

At O’Neill Regional Park, Trabuco Creek breached its banks, flooding portions of the park. That, coupled with mudslides, has left a muddy mess throughout the park. The closure and cleanup are expected to last through Jan. 1.

Aliso and Wood Canyons, Limestone Canyon and Whiting Ranch and Laguna Coast wilderness parks also remain closed while trails dry out and park staff assess damage. At Caspers Wilderness Park, only the Ortega Flats campground is open; the high San Juan Creek has cut off the rest of the park to any access.

Inside Irvine Regional Park, the normally dry Santiago Creek bed turned into a raging river Wednesday. The torrent was being fed by Irvine Lake spilling over Santiago Dam.

The creek remains impassable in Irvine and Santiago Oaks regional parks. Fishing is not permitted in the creek.

Trail and park closures are put in place for visitor safety and for park protection. Please observe all closures.

Most likely other socal trails are damaged too. I can't promise to check out a proposed hike in person prior to January 8th. I think we should take hiking off the January activity list.

GoKarting anyone??

Do you guys in the south realize how good you have it? Although I am new to the SLK family, the NorCal group doesn't usually get going until late February early March because IF we are lucky, that may be the first real sign of good weather, at least where you can plan a meet!

But I have a great idea for a January meet in NorCal! I say we invite someone up like, hmmmmm..........lets say Eddy, and he can give us a demonstration on how to install a Smart Top on My Car! Anyone interested would have bought their smart top's in advance of this event. Of course Eddy, you would be my guest so I would treat to dinner, you and the Mrs. could stay in our guest house and when the demonstration is over have a beautiful weekend in the bay area!

Hi everyone, I'm new to the Southern CA portion of the forum, and I'm interested in meeting up with the group for some of these great drives. Has anything been finalized yet for the date or venue?

I'm located in San Diego, and it was mentioned there are other San Diego area members that drive up - do they try to coordinate any caravans up to the main event? Depending on where and what time of day the main drive begins, I'd possibly drive up the day before and stay over night.

Let me know the latest, and looking forward to joining up with the group!
