Hey guys. I am trying to figure out how much time does a model last. I already saw some CLS spyshots and obviously our beloved SLK is going to change soon. The C and E just changed, so i'm guessing S-Class is next? sometime in 2012? It seems mercedes aer putting all their cars on the slanted lights + grills look, so the CLK might be next. I think the ideal time to get a model is 2 years after it came out, you can get it used and a good price with still some time for the generation to go. I think the only one that meets that criteria right now is the S-Class.

late 96-04 R170 6.5/7 years
late 04-11.5 maybe

either 6 to 7 years, yes the CLS is close to come out. The S-class maybe in 3-4 years time.

Aside from the SLK... CLS as well as the CL.

The CL will be renamed the S Class Coupe!

B & R Class in about 3 Years!

Cars are like technology unless you're really wealthy you can't always have the latest.

So it's best to pick something you really like and stick with it until it's time to change vehicles. Just my 2 cents! :) I've picked mine!

I got a 2007 last year and I did pretty good on the price. My dad plans on getting a 2008 this year, but I see the CLS is about to change. A friend just got a S550 for 100k but I see the 2007 ones for 65k, IMHO i think that just a waste of money. I see the S is not going to change for a few years so it might be the one to get right now, or wait 2 more years to get a first year E-Class. The used lot of the dealership is already littered with C-Series, the economy and all.

It appears SLK shares many parts with W203 C-class, which ended in sedans with W204 in 2007 and CLK in 2009 (replaced by E-class coupe). R171 steering wheels changed from W203 items to SL/CLS items in 2009.

I'd think the evolution of SLK will best match that of SL, however, and SL from 2003 is still going strong, and I'd think it would be the first to change.

You could be right. And I reckon the best version of anything (not just cars) is actually the Mk2 or the first "facelift" model. That's when they fix all the inevitable (and sometimes major) problems of a brand-new design, but haven't yet felt the need to fiddle around with the design just for silly "marketing" reasons, usually spoiling the original concept in the process.
