If the top isn't going to be working without a massive refit and isn't dropped more then a couple of times a year, is there a simple way for one person to raise and lower the top assuming the system is empty of fluid? I realize the manual shows a two person method to raise the top, nothing about lowering it. Ever done it . . .

It is possible but you run the risk of twisting the top mechanism. You will have to release the hydraulic pressure at the pump and manually disengage the locking mechanism with a 5mm wrench.

I used to do it all the time while I was working on the top of my 1998. You just have to be careful, it's a heavy top, and there are a couple of places where you can get your fingers crushed if you're not paying attention. But if you are paying attention, it's not a big deal, and it's not hard to follow the instructions.
