Looking for some advice, thinking of putting some South West Ireland miles on the 55, mapped out a route from Rosslare on the east, to Cork, Kenmare, Ring of Kerry, Dingle Peninsula, Limerick and back to Rosslare over 5 days, around 650 miles. Nearly all planned, ferry, hotels, etc, but big question is just before I go ahead and book, is 98RON or Super unleaded common in most petrol stations?

Thanks Guys, thats what I've found so far, was really excited but unless I can get good fuel over there, will have to plan something else in UK, shame really as I last did it 25yrs ago and the roads/scenery is breathtaking. Wait and see what other replies I may get. I have also emailed MAXOL, APPLEGREEN and TEXACO see what they come back with.

In regards to that octane booster, I looked at STP version. One of the comments was the 155ml bottle would boost 91 to a bit less than 92 (N America does not use RON) so it may be wise to investigate how much you would need b4 deciding to go this route (pun intended 😉 )

In addition, I found this

and

BUT this one claims 91 to 105 depending on usage but can be pricey as it requires regular use (actually they ALL require regular use ie every fill up):

The one that I used added 2 to 3 ON.
Regular is 95 in UK.

BP and maybe Esso run lowest super at 97.

The other trick that I used was to fill up regardless of need when I spotted Super.

4/5 run on 95 in my 55 (on a tour where I did not use additive) it was fine.
However, Deb's 350 decided to throw EML.
One fill of VPower and a 20 min run fixed 350.

You are looking at 650 miles?
Simply do the top up if needed (they do get super in Ireland, just when you go off piste it may be missing).

To be honest I have no idea what RON the petrol here is, my V6 and Flat 6 don't seem to have a problem with any of it and they drink enough of it. I fill up anywhere but I do throw a drop of Millers Petrol Power Ecomax in also.
The most expensive petrol here is probably Shell V Power and a quick google has produced the following. It is widely available so should not be a problem. Let me know when your passing through Cork and if I'm are around we might arrange an escort. (That's the 4 wheel not 2 leg type !) Enjoy your trip.

New Shell V-Power unleaded is a 99RON octane fuel. By comparison, regular Shell unleaded is 95RON.

You won’t do any damage using 95 but you will definitely feel the performance drop. I certainly could with a drop from 99 to 97 on my Scotland tour in the SL.
Our local Applegreen station has Super not sure if its available in Ireland though.

Thanks for all the above replies, I could fill up with 99 just before the Ferry so I'd have a tank full to get off the other side. I couldn't find any Shell stations on my route, but may do what Storminnorm1 suggest and use some Millers Petrol Power Eco Max if I cant find any higher octane fuel on my journey. I could just use 95RON, as there wont be much spirited driving, as the Wife is in tow lol, maybe when she nods off ;-)

I’ve not had any issues using 95 when there’s not been any super unleaded available. You do feel a slight drop off in performance, fuel economy goes down slightly and the engine doesn’t seem quite as smooth but I don’t think it does much harm for short term use.

Hoping to get over to the Emerald Isle myself this year so might have similar problems. Don’t let it put you off taking the trip.:)

Thanks again, never thought of looking in the manual, duh. So seems I can drive ok on 95RON, albeit I take it easy. From the manual.......

So, I was going to book the ferry and hotels today, but the Stena numbers have been really busy all day, wonder why???

I took my SL over there 2 years ago. No 98 available and you do notice the difference (car seemed sluggish) but for the limited milage you will be doing, it won't matter. Start with a full tank before you get into Ireland and fill up again with 98 as soon as you can when you get back to the UK.

well thanks for all the tips and pointers above, the trip is booked, need gentle ferry crossings, and weather to be good. Am so looking forward, as not really done a road trip in this one, and its over my Birthday weekend too. Happy Days.

I have no idea whether this is sensible or not, but, if you know roughly the mileage you're going to do, fill up with 95 when you've still got plenty of 98 in your tank. That way, you'll get more of your journey on a higher octane mix before you have to add some 95 to get you home.

Or, is this bollocks?

Bollox or not, I think it totally makes sense, until someone suggests otherwise ;-) I was having the exact same discussion with a friend today, and I think you're right here, and its something I'm gonna consider doing, fill up on half a tank, then keep filling up on half a tank, and then fill up fully when I get back to UK, theres a couple close to the port.

Thank you ;-)
