I have a 1997 R170 230 with about 38K miles on it. It suddenly started having issues that I am trying to chase down. I have checked all plugs going into the ECU and remain stumped. On occasion, I will start it, and the brake trouble, ABS, ASR, and seatbelt lights stay on, the car will not shift out of first gear, and the speedometer does not work. Yesterday was the first time stopping and turning the car off and back on did not work. I disconnected the battery overnight and did not have the issue this morning, but I am sure it will reappear, and still don't know where to look to try and track down the problem.

This sounds like a problem with the transmission control unit or TCU. Search here for "Pilot Bushing" - that is a common cause of TCU failures. Pull back the passenger footwell carpet, remove the styrofoam, free the steel equipment bridge and lay it down in the floorboard, and look for telltale signs of red transmission fluid leakage.

K40 Traction relay issue ?

Traction relay in K40 powers TCU ;) No power = TCU doesn't issue Cranking Inhibitor off ;)

ABS/ASR is coming from the ASR module that takes signals from speed sensors and TCU, but ASR is early editions=K-40 as it is the "power supplier" and usual suspect( ask me how I know). However dead speed/abs sensor does block the roof top, plus it also puts the Speedo in "deadman walking" zone(ask me how I know).
So would you bet a penny or a 🍺for K-40 and/or speed sensor?
Or you keep on the K-40 only?
The condition is, beer is Corona and the pay is face2face :)

I'm tending to agree with you @BaD_81 - seems that there are at least 2 issues going on here (y)
