Hi Guys

I have just picked up my Black SLK 350, first time I have ever owned a Mercedes and looking forward to finding out all the great things I can explore!! especially as I've not had the car explained to me, so any useful hints and tips would be most appreciated.

I believe my model has auto sensing windscreen wipers, but I can't tell, it has a Bluetooth setting, but wont connect to my iphone, and has the vario remote control roof, which I can't figure out!! Any suggestions on the best way to connect a ipod would be appreciated too, very demanding for a new guy eh? :)

Happy to swap golf lessons for instruction on the car, especially if you are are around the Cheltenham area.

Cheers
Steve

I’m relatively new to the SLK world and can fully understand all the questions you will have.
But guys, like DansSLK, need more information about your car to help you; if you give him your vin# he can check all the options that you have.
After that everyone will give you all the help you need, I’m sure!

do you have an owners manual?

http://www.billsden.org/mercedes/slk/docs/

what year vehicle?

autosensing wipers: turn wipers to first position. wait for rain or get water sprinkler or hose and dribble water, voila! if they come on you do.

vario roof or smarttop, again depends on what version.

Hi Steve, welcome from NE England. Congrats on your new car.

If you have auto sensing wipers, you can test them by turning the wiper switch to position one - if they are auto sensing, then nothing will happen if the screen is dry, if you don't have them then pos.1 is intermittent and the wipers will sweep the screen. If you think you have them, squirt a bit of water at the sensor on the screen near the rear-view mirror and they should start.

The ipod and bluetooth depend on what audio unit you have, and the age of the car. Pre facelift R171's have a bluetooth setting on the COMAND system which doesn't have any useable function. You might have a 3.5mm jack socket in the glovebox, to which, with a jack plug to plug lead you can connect the audio-out of your MP3 player - you do not get any control of the ipod though.

The roof remote control is a waste of time - you have to press and hold the 'open' button on the key, whilst pointing the end of it at the sensor on the door handle (it is infra-red, and therefore 'line of sight' and must be held fairly close). You will be better off getting a 'SmartTop Module' from the forum shop, which uses RF and only needs 3 clicks of the key to open/close the roof.

Hi Guys

Thanks for your welcoming messages, much appreciated, I have searched around the forums and found some useful info, albeit it seems I have no telephone connection which was intimated by the guy I bought it from!! The items on the iphone 3G connectivity have made me think its not worth bothering with anyway!! :)

I will check for the jack plug in the glove compartment too, is there a 12v charging outlet in there too?, sorry not got the car with me now, getting a couple of new tyres on there

I have updated my profile, hope there is enough info on there now. I will look at the manuals online and enjoy the investigation

Thanks again

Steve

The only 12V socket is either a cigarette lighter next to the ashtray in front of the gear lever, or, if you don't have that option, the ashtray is replaced by a storage compartment, and there will be a 12v outlet on the side of the transmission tunnel on the passenger side.

You can check to see if you have telephone pre-wiring by opening the center console storage compartment upper lid and looking in there. There will either be a mobile phone cradle (which is phone specific), a small triangular molding (which the phone cradle or bluetooth puck plugs into) or nothing at all, which means you don't have phone pre-wiring.

the 12v can be found on the left hand side of the transmission tunnel in the passenger footwell.

It is a cigarette lighter socket with a flap over it.

I use mine with the iphone 3g, and I find it very useful, but if you don't have telephone prep it will cost you a fortune to install and is not the way to go!!

You can check this by opening your central arm rest. If there is a section in the lid with a puck sticking out to enable connection of a cradle, then yo have telephone prep.

If not, don't worry about it.

If you are so inclined retrofitting the later sat nav unit is easily done, though not cheap, but gives excellent OE integration and bluetooth connection direct to the stereo.

Thanks again guys,

I will check the telephone wiring with the guys in the Garage, I took it to a local MB specialist MB&B Cheltenham, who have been nothing short of fantastic with their help and advice, even being kind enough to tighten up the passenger door panel to stop a slight rattling and replacing a handbrake spring Free Of Charge!

Don't laugh I'm useless at doing stuff on cars myself!! :)

Welcome from London, and if you want to send me your VIN, I'll pull your datacard and we can see just what you have in the car...

This is kind of like the license plate question - is there any danger of giving someone (besides Dan) your VIN?
:) Nah, I think I'm trustworthy! Seriously, I'd not want my VIN posted all over the internet for the same reasons as a license plate.

With a license plate, you can actually get to the VIN in a lot of states, so I'd guess the "risk" level is about the same....
