Greetings!
Driving my son's 2004 Crossfire Limited coupe (a.k.a. recycled R170) has given me the bug for the particular package of style, comfort, and performance of the SLK platform. And it would be fun to be a generation ahead of him

I have located a screaming deal on a 2006 SLK280 ($4k below book) but have some trepidation:
Pros:
classy black/tan
66k miles
dirt cheap
Cons:
Salvage title - seller can't describe what damage was
limited maintenance history - seller has had it 4 years and has "had my dad's shop do oil changes"
Bottom of bumper cover is trashed (held together with gaffer's tape)
Error codes/warnings for:
ESP
Restraint system
seatbelts
Brake wear

Since the M112/722.6 combo is bulletproof, I wasn't afraid to buy my son's car with 174k on it. Seems like the M272/7G-TRONIC has more significant land mines (if only it were 6-speed manual!). As soon as the seller gives me the VIN, I'll ask for data card help.

Yes, "There's nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes", but if the main faults are niggling electrical that I can address personally at leisure (being an electrical engineer helps), versus major mechanical and major expense, I just might take the plunge. Looks like this is the right place for help returning this classy ride to health with loving attention!
Cheers,
Brian

A few tips from a retired Insurance adjuster.

(1) If it has a salvage title it was deemed a total loss because of the extent/and or the cost of the damages. In most cases the insurance company will pay the owner and take the salvage and sell it at auction.
(2) This will all be reported to the DMV. In order to have it retitled you would have to have the DMV inspect it and then you would be issued a rebuilt title (if it passes inspection)
Both of these titles will greatly diminish the resale value.
(3) Many times (not all) the vehicles are put back together and many of the repairs are far below standards but are covered up cosmetically to resale to an unsuspecting buyer.
(4) Before plunking down any money I would have it thoroughly checked out by both a qualified mechanic and a qualified body shop.

Still waiting for the seller to give me VIN. I have some hope (since he's been driving it for 4 years) that any problems from the accident have been sorted.

I also found an M-B dealer nearby wiling to do a used car inspection for $54, and that would doubtless provide peace of mind (and ammunition for further negotiation) if the seller will let me have the car for an hour.

Welcome from Australia.
If in doubt, there are lots of good value used SLKs out there,
True, and I'd rather have manual transmission...so I won't be crushed if this one doesn't work out. The price on this one just lets me afford it now, instead of saving up so I can pay market value. And I'm a bit tired of my daily driver, a 2002 Dodge Caravan 4-cylinder with 213k. I see the SLK as a wee improvement in a few ways.

The R171 with a salvage title gets the nod over the Caravan in my eyes.

If the seller won't let you, then you have your answer and save $54.

Not sure what price range you're looking in, but this is how I found mine.

2004 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class For Sale in Joliet, IL - CarGurus
I do love that CarGurus lets you select by distance from you, trim/body style, and transmission (since I've been searching for manual transmission Crossfire Roadsters lately). Too bad several dealers can't separate auto-stick from manual with clutch, mentally! Always have to check the interior pictures to be sure. But the local market/deal ratings are also quite helpful.

I was planning on buying a 06 280, but several members insisted I tried the 350 just incase I wasn't satisfied with the 280's power (they were right). In my honest opinion I would pass on this vehicle the salvage title is a little worrying as well as the sellers shady behavior. Oh and those electrical problems are a pain in the neck :crying: I'm currently dealing with 6! My problems aside the SLK is an absolute dream to drive. Other cars leave me drowsy when driving them because the ride is so bland, so boring. The SLK (when working properly) is a thrill to drive especially with the top down. Simply put it's the best driving experience I've had.
