My ignition was getting sticky so I removed it, took it to 5 different locksmiths to get the tumblers adjusted. 3 of them refused to look at it. 1 said they could file them down but didn't feel comfortable working on it, another said the tumblers were fine and squeezed some teflon grease into the key slot.

I decided to reassemble the ignition and try it out. I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the lock cover back on. It says to replace it by putting the cover's flat spot at 9:00 and twist to 12:00 but with the flat spot at 9:00 the cover is not pushing on or sitting flush to the key slot. Do I need to hammer it on? Does the key need to be in the ignition to get it back on? Mind you if the key is in, I can't get the cover over it.

Can anyone help?

They have their key blade removed from the fob and turned to position 1.

I have done one of these. The barrel outer cover/retainer will only come off or refit if the key is in position 1. At this point it is quite easy to rotate the retainer off or back into place but it still might require a set of grips on it as there is not much to get hold of. If you study it closely it become more obvious how it all works and locates before you refit.

Regards the barrel and tumblers, once this is out of the ignition housing the tumblers can be carefully pressed out for cleaning but be careful with the springs as they are small and only do one at a time so as not to mix up locations. Press them back in when clean and they will pop into place and stay secure in the barrel.
To complicate matters... the steering lock assembly can also make it difficult to turn the key. If this is the case then a new assembly would be required as I don't think you can dismantle it and it would be worn anyway. To remove the whole ignition assembly from the steering column also requires the key to be in position 1 so don't break anything by forcing it or things become really difficult. You can swop the barrel into the new unit to keep the key the same.

Hi,

Taking the Barrell in and out is easy when you've done a few like everything :wink:

To get it out, Key In, turn to pos 1, press slightly and turn Retaining Ring, now, still in pos 1 pull the Key and Barrell comes out with it !!

Now the Key will pull out of Barrell for working on it.

To Replace, put Retainer Ring over Key, insert Key into Barrell, hold it above the Lock Aperture, at pos 1 position, push Barrel etc in and locate, whilst also locating Retaining Ring, and pressing on Retaining Ring and turning to retain it all in place.

Turn to off position and remove key !! Now re insert Key and test it is all working OK

I can't remember which way to turn the Retaining Ring, but unless it's been parked in the sea and all corroded they come off really easy, so try it both ways.
