Hi,
I recently purchased a 2001 SLK320 and now have a problem that I hope someone can help with.
I have two keys and when either are put in the ignition and the key turned all the lights come on but there is no power to the starter motor.
I understand the sensor that recognises the keys is probably not working?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi John.C, and welcome to SLKWorld.com from the UK Midlands - Thanks for joining us! :)

You may be right with your diagnosis, but I'm no expert... although I'd also be tempted to check the condition of the battery, as these cars tend to like a great (not just good) battery to function well. I'm sure other members will be along shortly with some further advice or suggestions.

In the meantime, here's some other tips and advice on other things...

Don’t forget to lube those seals:
Spring is here~Gummi Pflege! Lube your seals/Lithium grease your joints/hinges

Mods you should think about doing to your SLK:
• SmartTop: http://www.slkworld.com/general-discussion/121481-what-smarttop-all-members-keep-talking-about.html
• OEM windscreen or Lighted/etched windscreen

Some tips to make your visit here more enjoyable:
• Post your VIN (or VIN of a car you're looking at) in the Vehicle Datacard Request section to get a free datacard (options on the car).

• If you haven’t, please use the 'search' feature at the top right of the page for your questions as they have probably been asked before. Remember, ‘Search’ is your friend.
• If you wish to become PM (Private Message) capable, you need 15 posts. To get those 15 posts quickly, just go to the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section and welcome enough new members to obtain your needed posts to PM.
• Want to post a picture? Start a new thread or make a post, click ‘edit’, click on the ‘paper clip’ or ‘advanced’ and/or ‘manage attachments’ then ‘choose file’ then ‘upload’ and ‘submit’! If iPhone pics, you need to rename any additional pics as iPhone names its pics all the same, image.jpg.
• Want to ‘like’ or thank’ someone’s comments? Use the ‘like’ button to the right or the ‘Thanks’ button, bottom right of any individual’s post that you like. This saves you having to comment.
• New members should be aware that the 'New Posts' link in the info bar towards the top of the screen is a great way to see all of the posts you have missed since you were on the forum last. Remember to click 'mark forums read' under ‘quick links’ when you leave.

test that battery for cranking power. the slk wants a great battery and not a good one. you might have a cell or cells going bad. just saying.

Hello and good morning from South Yorkshire.
I also have an early 320 and had similar problems, had a failing battery everything OK after a charge but a week later strange things would happen.
I would check your battery voltage if its 12.74 then its OK if its 12.1-12.2 then not good enough for a SLK, I would then go on eBay and buy a cheap OBD II Reader and check the car for fault codes (they are about £11.00 and worth every penny )
May also be worth resetting the ECU (get radio code first) disconnect the negative terminal leave off for 30 mins then reconnect.
Then try the key in the ignition again and see if it will start.

Regards
Stuart.

Welcome from Wisconsin USA.

It looks like you've gotten a couple suggestions and it's been a few hours... have you solved the problem yet? It could be me some day so I'll be curious about the solution.

Good luck if not resolved yet.
