Hi folks

I’m new to the forum so please excuse me if I get anything wrong as this is my first post. I’m looking for some help, hints or guidance on what to do. The story:

- Got my SLK 230 back in May 17, it’s a UK registered P reg and I love it; had no problems with it until.......

- Managed to break the key in the door lock (aaaarrrgghhhh); due to a few reasons I wasn’t able to get this sorted immediately, the resultant of this being the battery went flat.

- Removed the lock from the door and had a company remove the broken blade and make me up a new key.

- Went back to the car, charged the battery and it started first go, no problems at all. Drove it for some 20 miles, smiling again.

- Went to start it a couple of days ago and that’s when things turned sour; the key goes into the ignition, but I cannot turn it at all - its like the steering lock is stuck on.

- Spoke to a good mate of mine who said that the SLK has an electric steering lock on it and if the battery was low there’d be a problem. So I went and got myself a decent battery, fitted it and.....

- The key still doesn’t turn in the ignition::frown:

As I said, I’m looking for some tips/guidance on what to do. My plan is to have a beer and do some research but bottom line I am thinking of getting a new ignition barrel and key, get it fitted and hopefully that’ll sort things.

So my question is “is this a good plan, a simple way of curing the problem”????

It could be something as simple as the steering is jammed. With your right hand on the key and left hand on the wheel, turn the wheel back and forth while turning the key. Oh, you're in the uk, left hand on key etc.

OK, before you do anything else, read up on the stuck ignition key problem. If this is the first time the key is stuck, there may be hope for you.

The key cylinder can degrade and stick. If you carefully turn the key and keep trying, it may work...once, but long enough for you to remove the cylinder. Read up on the technique.

My key stuck 3-4 times before it became unusable. I didn't know that the fix at that point is exceptionally annoying and time-consuming. But it can be done. Hope you can manage to extract that cylinder! Let us know what happens.

I think that the new key may be the cause.


Did they use the electrics from the old key? If not it will need coding to the car.
This can only be done on the DAS/STAR system...dealer visit.
It's is coded to individual cars.


If you have a spare, does that work?

@Garfalls came up with a way around it. Basically replacing a bunch of stuff.

I believe that the DAS doesn't actually stop the key turning in the lock - it just stops the car from starting, if you follow. In addition, START ERROR *should* be displayed in the instrument cluster. For this reason I don't think (yet) you have a problem with DAS. However, we need a bit more help from you to guide us towards the solution:

Did the new key you had just replace the key but keep the fob or the fob innards the same?

If the key doesn't turn in the ignition this could be the new key (do you have one or two keys? Is it just the one key or both that doesn't turn?)

Looking around on the Internet there are tales of stuck ignition keys and the three reasons for failure seem to be:
  • worn ignition lock mechanism
  • steering wheel interplay with the ignition lock
  • car gear selector not firmly in PARK
There is some help here in terms of how to get the lock out of the car - and even clean/service it. That may help you.
