OK from where I left off last time, had codes p0410, p0300, p0302, p1519 and a p0105 I think the last one was!!

anyway, the recent ones are p0410, p0300, and p0302.
the new shut off valve did the trick on the p0410. I did buy the check valve just in case but it was not needed at this time.

new coils ,wires and direct coil boots fixed all misfires, p0300 and p0302

as I was troubleshooting all these codes I came across many rubber vac line connectors that were just old and about to fall off their lines. so I tracked down as many as I could and replaced them with store bought vac hose rubber... p1519 (MAP sensor) has a vac line on the bottom of the sensor that was barely held on by a hair piece of old hose. code fixed!
the MAP sensor is located right next to the first intake tube of the intake manifold. one screw holds the sensor on a bracket and vac line runs out the bottom of it.

next was just a surprise fix. p0105 which is the cam adjust solenoid...I pressure washed the engine months ago when I found that the solenoid was leaking oil. got most of the oil off of it back then. but apparently I did not wash it good enough.
I was cleaning out the supercharger connector with contact spray and noticed that a lot of oil had again leaked out around the solenoid. so I just started spraying that whole area with contact cleaner. I notice that it was cleaning a lot better then the pressure washing I did awhile back. I popped off the solenoid connector and oil drops came out of it. so sprayed that along with all the wiring in that area. soaked it down!
cleared all the codes and went for a drive...bam!!! NO CODE!!!!
drove about ten miles and nothing...hope it stays that way!!!:Beer:


OK another supercharger question,,,,
up til now I assumed that my SC clutch was always on because the face of the clutch was always spinning at all rpm's. I've seen many vids showing this condition where the clutch face spins while the clutch was engaged.

So my question is. has there ever been a case, where the face of the SC clutch is spinning but the clutch itself was not engaged???????

here's what I'm seeing. while the engine is running and I work the gas from under the hood I can bring the rpm's up slowly and I when I hit 2000 rpm's I hear the SC kick in!!!! I hear it because its old and it make noise to begin with. but I can hear it kick in at 2000rpm's every time I hit it...
also, when I unplug the SC I get a code for it. but when its plugged up and running no codes?????

thoughts??????

Warning - I am no expert on this subject. But I did find this interesting video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCmF6fK-Mn8. This is for the CLK 230 kompressor - similar, if not the same, engine as our SLK 230.
This car had an issue with the ECU? Just a thought for our cars? I would be interested in knowing - for sure - if this applies to our engine as well.

You need to check with a MB dealer as there was a Service Campaign a few years back where they would replace the cam adjuster that was leaking and put in a wire patch to prevent oil from wicking into the wires. The wicking can travel through out the wire loom to ECU and other places.

MB Service Campaign 2009100001 DEC 09.

This would be done at no charge to you sort of like a recall, due to not a safety problem letters are not sent to owners but done when car is brought in and owner ask about it.

Chuck, he has a r170. Would that service campaign affect his?

Yes that was a service campaign was for the 170 USA cars. (Service Campaign No. 2009100001 DEC 09) There is another one that came out about year and half ago for the 171. ( Campaign No. 2012070002, September 2012) For the 171 they only install the wire patch and not replace the leaking cam adjuster. The 170 is is the 230 and the 171 is the six cylinder.

Good info Chuck - thanks for posting. The campaigns you posted and referred to only affected the SLK230's right. No such issues with the 320's right?

Len, in reading the SC for the 170, I read it as for the 170 230 which has engine 111 and the 203 (c class) with engine 271 and engine 111.

I don't think these apply to gonzosc1 and myself (R170 SLK230 1999-2000 - pre-facelift). Campaign No. 2009100001, December 2009 is for newer SLKs on/after 2001. Please see subject/applicability within the bulletin. But good info to know anyway.

For gonzosc1's orginial supercharger clutch question: FYI. The superchargers changed for the SLK 230s. Ours older R170 SLK used used the M62 supercharger (with clutch), Later model R170s used the smaller M45 supercharger. (No Clutch).

yeah I saw that vid before too.

just wondering, if the SC clutch bearing is bad (rattles) or locked would that make the face of the SC spin also???

I asked the MB service dept if they could track down all the work that has been done to the car, they said no!! they said they can only keep track of the work they do, not other dealers!! I was hoping that all the MB dealers would be networked together but not so.

carfax show the car in 2-3 other service departments. I guess I would have to track them down myself to find out exactly what has been done to the car over the years!
high miles and I would hate to try and replace the timing chain only to find out it was done 10-20k miles ago...

OOP, missed the years that part. I would check with MB and see if I could buy the wire patch and install it myself. Wicking needs to be stopped and the wire patch does that. Another fix would remove about 2 inches of insulation and solider the strands of wire into one solid wire and then tape it shut.

Thanks Chuck - yeah, I saw that what you posted only applied to the SLK230. I wasn't sure if that's all you posted because that what the question was about or if there might have been another campaign for the SLK320's. I didn't think my car was affected, but I just wanted to be sure.

What's your source for getting the official MB campaign documents?

They can track down any warranty work, recall work and service campaign work done at any dealer. MBUSA can tell you that too.

I bought my first SLK under warranty and thus everything should show up in CarFAX. As should anything from a police report, insurance claim, title change etc. But now I have all work done at an independent Mercedes repair shop who does not report things. If you bought the car way over the 50K range you might check with the previous owner if you can find them AND they keep service records. Otherwise you may not really know what went on with the car unless the previous owner did have work done at larger repair shops. When I buy filters and other items from Mercedes they do ask me for my VIN. So I am sure that is recorded in some Database. Plus they use it go get the right part. Good luck with your detective work.

P0805 after P0302 + P0410

Hi all,

Just wanted to add thanks to the forum (too many to mention ATM), and throw in my $0.02.

I started getting P0302 and P0410 a few days ago on my 200K+ '98 R170. Well, searching this forum (and the sister site) didn't yield direct answers, but pretty strongly implicated the coil pack (s), the secondary air injection parts (check valve and/or shut off valve), or possibly even the catalytic converter. Cat? Really?!?!? Googling P0302 and P0410 together just wasn't good news on the general Internet.

Well, my local, independent import parts shop had the OEM Bosch coils in stock, so I figured I'd take a chance on those first. Between new coil packs and cleaning the contacts on the existing wireset/plugs (because they didn't have the wireset in stock), it started running smoothly again. But after a stop/restart, MIL/CEL was back on with P0805 ("Clutch Position Sensor Circuit"). WTH? I didn't connect the dots on that. So up with the hood...

In the process of troubleshooting the first problem, I had opened the air filter box to make space to peek around and look at the air filter. To do that requires disconnecting the two air boots, and in that process I unplugged the VDO/Siemens recirculating air flap controller (it's right next to the secondary air injection shut off valve), and set the top aside. Anyway, once I realized the "clutch" in the P0805 code wasn't transmission related, but was the clutch for the SC, the dim light bulb above my head flickered a bit, and I slowly realized the supercharger wouldn't engage when I revved the engine. Turned out I failed to reconnect the VDO SC air controller plug all the way. I plugged it in tight, and whew! That fixed the P0805 code.

Searching the forum revealed a post for the same thing from about four years ago.

Anyway, it's a long story, but I hope this helps someone that's got weird supercharger issues. That plug is in a tight spot.
