Hi all,

I am an aviation engineer and long-time gearhead that has gotten bitten by the racing bug. I've mostly been a Nissan guy to this point (S13/S14/Z32/Z34), but I've spun wrenches on all sorts of cars, like RX7s, DSMs and old muscle cars.

I'm looking into buying/fixing a salvage SLK 250/350 as a platform for entering GTS in NASA. There's simply too many M3's and they need some competition.

It appears that this is going to be a challenge, as there isn't a ton of aftermarket support (compared to S/Z chassis) and limited availability of manual transmission parts/cars.

Thanks for keeping this place going, and I look forward to interacting with you guys!

Welcome.

if you're making a dedicated track car, you don't care about cosmetics or operation of the top. That opens the aperture for suitable cars on the market.

Thanks, all, for the warm welcome.

Bingo. While I'd like to avoid major frustration of the aesthetic kind (fixing frame rails or welding patches into the unibody) or the engine (rod knock), replacing some panels/glass or troubleshooting a non-start is not a worry. Cars like this are on my radar: 2006 SLK 350

A whole other worry is whether or not I'll fit in the danged thing with a helmet and roll cage. I'm not a small fella at 6'4", 210lbs. :D

You may have a hard time making things fit if your track organization requires a roll cage. I think that someone your size will fit in the car, but the cage may be difficult.

I'll be in Richmond tomorrow. Might have to stop and take a look at this salvage car. Note that the radiator is not aligned with the front of the car.

Thanks, all, for the warm welcome.

This is my problem in quite a few sports cars. My helmet rubs on the ceiling in my Z. I might be able to fit with some fixed racing seats and side mount brackets. I'm going to have to hunt an SLK down just to measure before I buy one. My secondary concern with the cage is fitting the main hoop in (an inverted "U" at the B pillar) in that tight space behind the seat. I can toss all the non-structural roof components since I'll be fixing it closed, but that might not be enough still. I'll have to see when I get there.

Let me know if you do, I'd be interested in hearing what you uncover.

I did catch that. It looks like the driver's side end radiator tank took a battering along with the airbox and the rest of the front end. Replacing the rad and welding on a new mount tab or two shouldn't be a big deal. My heart isn't set on that car (and it's pretty far from me), so I can skip it. But that kind of work I'd have no problem with.
