Hi, I have a 1999 SLK230 with a humming/wineing noise coming behind the seats. It sounds like a Fuel Pump Noise but I jacked up the slk and check from the bottom. The fuel pump seems to be working normally but when I'm inside the car with the engine running with windows UP. you can hear the humming of the fuel pump? From under the car, I don't hear it at all... My questions is, is there anything INSIDE the fuel tank that will make noises??? I was thinking about replacing the fuel pump but they aren't cheap so. Just want to make sure that's what I need before throwing parts at it.. Any info is helpful, Thank You!

NO its NOT an EVAP issue. I KNOW its the fuel pump because the humming ONLY come on when the engine is running. If I cycle the key ON, i can hear the fuel pump(humming) priming than shuts off if the engine isn't running. I have located down to fuel pump BUT I was just wondering if this is a common issue for the SLK? Everything works, NO MIL, no codes, starts up normally. just the humming is driving me crazy. I can't hear it that much when I'm driving but once the engine is @ idle and windows are UP and radio is OFF, I can hear it high pitch humming. also is there anything INSIDE the fuel tank that would it noise?

I did search, but no luck...:biglaugh:

Thanks

that is what my previous, previous slk 02 320 did. it only made the noise when engine on. the mechanic replaced the charcoal cannister pump and it still did it. right behind the passenger seat.

is the humming continuous or off and on every 30 secs or so?

So what did you do to fix the humming noise? or did you just give up and sold the car? :)

SO back to the question... R/R Fuel Pump? Good idea???

Let me know...

Thanks

hello !

so what is the outcome here?

i have SLK 230 2001 just bought it yesterday and i have the same hum.
a mechanic i took it to, took 12 seconds of sitting in the car to determine it is the Fuel Pump.

questions -

1. if replacing the pump didnt get rid of the hum so where does the hum come from?

2. is it safe to keep driving the car with that hum?? it obviously pumps fuel since im driving just fine, can it break all of the sudden and disable the car?

the mechanic also decided the Turbo component needs to be replaced, but i dont thing its related.

I have the same for years.
Makes me happy to feel like the engine is at the back :biglaugh:

Maybe it's related to the exhaust...

I have a 2000 SLK 230 with this same sort of noise. I would say it sounds a little more like a rubbing sound than humming, but we're probably talking about the same thing. It's definitely coming from behind the seats/rear of the car. It does it only while driving, low speed and high speed, and almost has a rhythm to it. I don't really have an answer yet for it, but I have done quite a lot of research on it, so maybe this will help.

My Mercedes mechanic at first told me it was the rear brake rotors which were grooved. I replaced those and still had the same noise.

Other similar types of possible noises mentioned on this and other forums:
1. charcoal cannister shut off valve--mentioned above.
2. rear differential problem
3. U joint going bad
4. pinion bearing going bad
5. just typical road noise
6. parking brake still slightly engaged on rear brakes

I'm taking this list to my mechanic again and see if we can determine what it is. I test drove two other SLK 230s before I bought mine and I don't recall hearing this noise while driving those other cars.

Did you ever solve the SLK humming noise ?

I have just bought a 2000 SLK230, and have the exact samenoise, which is always there whilst theengine runs, and is a def hum. just behind the seats.

It changes pitch very slightly if I put the lights on (usingelectrical power), but is does not change if you rev the engine.

It sounds like a fuel pump issue ?, or maybe to do with theexhaust system ?

But it does concern me , as very audible (& no I don't just want to switch themusic up)

Thanks
Martin
