Hello, can someone please show me how i can remove the rear fender pannels of my slk R170?

Other than the front fender, I can't find any movies on that at doctor Google.

I have to remove the rear fenders because they are totally rusted.

Thanks in advance for your reactions!

You need to remove the boot lining, rear and sides. The sides need the roof to be part lowered to the point where the boot (trunk) lid lifts up fully. The side panels then can be slotted around the arms. Panels held in by plastic clips that need to be pried out. Once panels are out you need to:

  1. Disconnect ariel leads rear left, item 60
  2. Remove the two main bolts and washers, item 220/230
  3. Remove the two bolts on each side of the wheel arch, item 180/240
  4. Pull off the bumper
The bolt 240 is accessed from inside the trunk. The bolt 180 from behind the rubber on the wheel arch.

Simples

Hi,

I'd say he needs an angle grinder and a spot weld drill to remove the rear 1/4's, big job as they are welded on

Personally I'd weld new Arch Panels in, it is usually only the Arches that are rotten ;)

Hey Dave,

Thanks for your reaction. Now I know that the rear fenders are welded.
I thought it would be like the front fenders.
Have found allready some pictures from rear fenders, so I thought it were just screwd panels.

Are there exemples on this site about welding new arch panels?

This is a subject that is going to come up a lot, give it a couple of years or so and we'll see more and more ..

Is there anywhere that makes rear wheel arch panels for the R170?
If not, is there anything else on the market that is a direct fit? - W202 & W203 rear wheel arch repair panels I know exist but never really had a good look at them, do they fit?

Hi,

I haven't done an exhaustive search, but could not find R170 ones when I looked for someone else here ;)

CLK W209 seem like someone with reasonable tools and fabrication skills could cut them and do a nice welded repair panel on an R170 Arch, there may be others too, but these just looked like the nearest MB Profile I could find, I don't need them now, mine are pretty good, but in a couple of years maybe yes ;) ..................

Same thing Dave, have yet to see any.
I have got a slow conversation going on with these ppl, I wondered why they don't do them and I'm waiting a response .

Ridiculous price of front wings compared to the C Class' tho.

Hi,

I'm lucky, the Left Front Wing on mine was replaced with a genuine one not long before I bought it, and the Right Front is currently OK, although the colour match is off, it has been fillered, and looks like Stevie Wonder painted it lol, but the Car still looks nice.

I will replace both Rear Arches and that Right Front Wing when I do a full shoot on the Car, but that won't be until Dec 2020 as this winters project will be the V8 Power

I recently bought Both Roof Panels with no Rust, and am looking for 2 Doors and Bonnet and Boot, I can then paint them at my leisure next year, and just bolt them on when I'm doing the Wings and 1/4's

It will avoid too much down time for the car, and having it in the workshop in a million bits for weeks on end and so earning no money, lesson learned there with the W220 paintwork epic, which I am desperately trying to finish before October / November when the R170 comes off the road lol.

I really need a (much much) bigger Workshop :(

Cheers Dave

Will indeed be a subject for the near future.

Going to continue my search and let you know when I find a good solution.

Thanks to everybody here who answered my post!

Have you checked the inner wing mounts. Very few r170's that the inner wing mounts have not turned to dust :frown:
Hi,

Yeah, all good, even actual metal around all the Arches inside, just had the outsides skimmed and various paintwork over it's years.

The Car has had Waxoyl blasted everywhere from an early age by the look of it ;)

Body is pretty sound right now, I'll be getting into the Body Resto, after it's V8 Install, at which time I can get right intimate with it's unseen portions, but I have had all wheel-arch liners, trunk liners, F & R Lamp Units etc out when I first got it last December.

I looked at some real old dogs before settling on this one

Cheers Dave
