What Jeff said. With these tire specs (130 + MPH ) you can get all kinds of tread wear ratings, and like anything, you usually sacrifice handling for tread life. I measure tread depth with a gauge and replace when it gets down in the 3 range. Plenty of experience on the site on tires. Read on !

Best Wishes,

Quite a few posts on the site have identified 10K miles as about the average rear tire replacement with front doing 2 to 3 times that mileage. Rears on Challenge lasted right at 10K miles.

I have a 2012 SLK with 15k mikes, and the ride is loud....is it time to replace tires?
Check the tire tread depth with a gauge (across the 3 or 4 grooves), go with lowest (thinnest) reading. It should be above 3/32" or 3mm. Measure the tread depth on all four tires and shine a light and inspect the inner tire walls especially on the front tires.

See my experience: http://www.slkworld.com/tires-wheels-brakes-suspension/13886-check-your-tires-esp-inner-side-walls.html

I normally have to replace the rear tires between 10-12K miles.

Another big issue to consider is the age of the tire. Once your tires get to eight years or so, you might want to think about a change. I expect to have to replace mine well before they tread wears out. Some countries have an age limit on tires. There are also some interesting articles on the web about old tires.
