What is a reasonable price one would be expected to pay for a mint 2005 55 AMG in Caspian blue, beige unmarked leather. I'm asking because I want it! It's up for £16000
As you might imagine, it's a niche market in UK, and as a consequence there can be a wide differential between sellers and buyers, where specifications (colour especially) condition, and mileage compete with the occasional need for private sellers to turn their 'pride and joy' into cash quickly. Specialist dealers are generally prepared to hold out for their price, private sellers often lament that they can't get interest at anything close to dealer prices.

For 2005, the cheapest I've seen recently is £10k and the most expensive £20k. The rest is up to you.

My advice - if you intend to keep the car for the duration, don't compromise - buy with your heart. If you think you might put it back onto the market in a year or two, buy with your head. Bear in mind these things are addictive...

Good advice. The challenge is to know oneself.

Bought my 08 55, 22 months ago for £23k. It was the first one I looked at and it was FANTASTIC. After putting down a deposit, I went to look at another, 05 55, 1 owner for £15k. It was rubbish. If i'd looked at it first, i would never have bought an SLK. 1,3, and 6 months after buying it, i was still saying to myself, yep, it's still good. Blue, is the best colour, but some of the options may be on your tick list as well. And its a lot easier to keep your money, and buy later, than to change it all once bought. If you're in love, buy it. If not walk away !!

My experience is that you trade time for money. Key is to get the best car you can afford and the less you can afford the longer it will take. That said my experience is that you will always pay more from a dealer than a private party and the difference should include some sort of a warranty.

Seems people are scared of coming to Wales! Not a single enquiry in over 2 months! The more I drive the new 172 the closer I get to putting that on the market and keeping the 171!

With cars being advertised at £16000 and more I don't understand what is keeping people away.

Very curious as to why you seem to prefer driving the 171 over the 172. Reason I ask is bcos I had a 171 55 and now drive a 172 350, and while one cannot compare a 350 with a 55, the build quality and refinement in the 172 is way better than my 171 55. Me, I will take the 172 over a 171 any day, regardless of model (350 or 55)... Jus' sayn'....

My 172 is silver ....... it's boring ( seriously considering painting mine white ) . It spins the wheels far easier ( maybe that's the conti's I've got on it, not impressed ), has been chipped to 400 hp ATRW and it is probably much more planted on the road but I spent 5 years driving the R171 and I was far more at home and in tune with it. You have to drive the 172 at licence loosing speeds in the UK to make it 1/2 as much fun.

Oh and from a few yards away, apart from the V8 on the wings and 4 tailpipes you can't tell it from an oil burning 250 cdi and all the drivers of those seem to be interested in is how low they can get their fuel consumption!

The R172 crowd is very, very different to the R171 crowd. :) :) :)

There's quite a few former 171 owners in the 172 crowd.

I meet a lot of both and find them all valuable contributor and easy to get on with.

I've done many tours with a mix of the three model types.
Nothing but good in my view.

I am surprised yours hasn't sold. I thought pit priced to sell.

As for 55 prices, the 170s are as randomly priced.
I ended up judging by how much that I wanted the individual car,
rather than value. Would I be prepared to pay that price?

Found what I wanted and haven't looked back.

After owning a 230 I already knew that it would be a keeper for a few years.
Now that I have it I have zero intention of replacing bar bad stuff happening that
is outside my control.

I agree, silver color can indeed be boring! I have that color on my current 2012 A4. If that blue 55 in the ad is yours, that is absolutely beautiful car. I can understand loving that car and owning that car for ever. Why are you selling it? What a gorgeous car tho'... Wish it was on this side of the pond and I might be tempted...
