how do I reset my gear selection after removing gearbox

My dad once told me the north east is the rear of England and Middlesbrough is shoved right up it. Thought I'd share that, now how do I reset my gear selection after removing gearbox, gears are all over. Do I put car (r170 ) in reverse and push orange button on g/box then pull it back out.
