Of course you should buy a SLK, whatever the year and type.
Whether the one you are eyeballing is any good cannot be evaluated through the internet. Maybe there is a SLK owner member of this forum nearby that can spare a couple of hours to test drive it and look for 'known issues'.
You should make a study of this vehicle and understand what it is and does. A starting point is to examine the differences between the 350 and it. There is a lot of differences. The next things is the cost of service and parts. Again there is a big spread in prices between the two. Besides maintenance, you should consider operating costs. The V8 is quite thirsty and only drinks premium.
Why do people buy a car like this? The 350 has a 300 HP & 266 Ft Lbs of torque which is more than sufficient to propel a 3,300 pound buggy around. The 55 has 355 HP & 376 Ft Lbs of torque which is a great deal of thrust in a relatively light vehicle. If you have a heavy foot and like to quickly wear out your tires, then the 55 might be for you, but one caveat is it is gonna cost you!
Finally, why did the previous owner buy this car? Was it an old grandma or some wild eyed maniac who enjoyed terrorizing the streets at night while wearing a cape and mask? In this regard, he may have gotten rid of the car, because it was getting tired. Thus it needs a competent thorough inspection to see the engine, transmission, and running gear are in good shape. If this car has any serious problems, it can put a huge hole in your wallet.
I was looking at a 2006 SL55 AMG and asked for advice from my repair shop (Elite Benz Automotive, Alexandria VA). I am not sure if this applies to the SLK series but I was advised to look for a 2007 or better as there were less hydraulics.
FWIW, I did check out the -55 and the previous owner simply trashed the car. Ergo I wound up with a 2012 SLK350.
