Hello everyone,

Firstly let me say what a great forum this is :)

I have been a member for a few days now and have learnt quite a bit in my short time on here.

I am from the UK (Hampshire) and have started looking for a black SLK 55 AMG (R171) but not sure on what year. I think (you never know what life has in store) this purchase will be a keeper so I am in no rush to find my perfect car.

I have a few questions which I dont seem to find the answer for;

Are all the R171 the same or was there a facelift around 2007/08 ? - I dont seem to be able to tell. Some ads I see state facelift, front spoiler etc and darker lens ?

I have been looking at pre March 06 cars due to the car tax increase for later cars and this one especially;

http://pistonheads.com/sales/2652577.htm

I love the spec :) - Do all Harmon Kardon upgrades have the Ipod connection ?

but I am willing to get a newer car if it makes sense ??

All the best

Steve

Hello Steve

I have a 2008 SLK 55 in Black. Registered in Jan 2008 so just before the facelift.

If I was you I would buy according to your budget i.e the best you can afford. Make sure it has a warranty as these cars although reliable are expensive to fix. MB Tier 1 is the best IMHO.

The earlier cars have bigger brakes but after March 2008 the bumpers, wing mirrors and interior are all slightly different.

The exterior differences are less noticeable on black cars.

Make sure you buy with the correct spec; air scarf, Harmon Kardon, climate, ipod, heated seats. Later cars also had paddles on the steering wheel (the one on the link did not).

Check the service history and mileage are correct and have a good long hard look around the car.

The wheels should be machine polished on the outer edges if they are not then they have been re-sprayed (look to be sprayed in the photo??)

I live in Bucks so not far away from you. If you view any cars near me let me know, am happy to give my opinion.

Cheers

Looking at it the wing mirrors have been tinted, a smaller aerial fitted (looks better than original but reception is not as good) and the wheels are from the later car.

I have the same wheels as did not like ones mine came with. It's not a face lifted car but there is no mention of previous owners or warranty.

It's got all the extras that you would want, cannot see the speakers to check they are HC.

I am sure you can knock the price down though. Looks about right for the money.

Mine cost me £36k in April 10 and is exactly the same (had 13,000 miles) so with the extra mileage and a years depreciation price is fair.

Need a warranty though!!!!

Welcome!

Is the SLK55 the finest Sports Car on the road? I believe so and am in a quandary.

We have owned our SLK55 for 18 months and now that we are about to change I am failing to find a better Sports Car. The Aston Martin V8 Vantage performance is way off. Likewise the current Porsche 911. Audi R8 is closer but still, like all the above, you have to use the upper revs to access the performance, and that takes time. In real life driving (overtake right now!) the SLK55's mid range torque is supassed only by a Porsche Turbo in my experience.

The magazine performance figures can often be meaningless. For a more realistic view, check Road & Track's test figures for the SLK55.

I drove down to Goodwood early on Sunday morning - and for country A & B roads in England if you can name a better Sports Car I would like to know it.

Anyway, regretfully it has to go and, for business reasons, we are about trade it in on a Bentley CGT.

If you are interested in a Silver w/ Black Nappa hide SLK55 2009 (last updated model) with 21,000 miles - still under new car warranty until Jan 2012. Faultless, spotless inside & out and I believe with every extra (except heated steering wheel). Full MB History of course.

The later updated model had significant improvements, especially to the gearbox (faster changes) and steering (more feel), and will hold it's value much better.

It's trade-in value is within your budget, but it has to be this week (we are near Haslemere) - if you are interested please call me on 01428 687722 - Paul Goddard

If you are fixed on a black one the essential options to demand are:

Command
Airscarf
OE 'perspex' Partition between headrests

The desirable options are:

Harmon Kardon Upgrade
Luxury Climate Control (quite rare)
Linguatronic
Parking sensors
5 spoke wheels ?

Our car has all these & more

Saw the car at Goodwood - nice - but didn't see a "For Sale" board or you may have been walking home.:biglaugh: I think it was the only SLK55 at the meet.
