Currently running Insignia Elite Estate and I'm researching to purchase an slk when my days of long journeys with large loads or multiple passengers are over - soon, hopefully.

I'd prefer a manual gearbox but that seems to shunt me back to prior 2011 so I might be having second thoughts on that. Currently looking only in Autotrader to see what's available. Should I be looking elsewhere?

Hi Jim, and welcome to SLKWorld.com from the UK Midlands - Thanks for joining us and posting an intro! :)

Auto trader is as good a place as any to start, although if you're looking for quite recent model, perhaps also check out your local MB dealer(s). Once you've figured out which model/engine you're looking for, I guess they'll be able to search other dealers for something suitable too.

We have quite a few members in the UK that like to meet up from time to time. If you're interested in joining us sometime (even if it's before you've got your SLK), just keep an eye on the UK Region section, as we post meeting plans there! There's even a meet planned quite local to you for Sunday 5th Feb! :tu:

There is a summary post that I maintain for our UK meets ( here ). Links to examples and pictures from last year's meets are available here. We're a friendly group, and always happy to welcome new members at any of our meets.

Finally, we also recently started plotting where our UK members are - check out the thread for that here: SLKWorld UK & Ireland Members and Meeting Points Map

Thank you

Welcome to SLKWorld, enjoy your stay

Check out MB as well as Ebay :)frown:), Autotrader, Pistonheads etc

I got mind from Sytner Select which is the used car outlet from the Sytner Group: Sytner Select | Sytner

The auto box is OK and in manual mode it behaves similar to a manual... however the box is not as good (IMO) as the VAG DSG as it lacks the duel clutch setup; although the new 'box in the SLC is improved... However, drive one and see what you think. I am a bit of an automatic convert having had manuals for the last ~30yrs and only the last two (Scirocco DSG and the SLK) being automatics and, to be honest, I will find it hard to move back to a manual gearbox given the smoothness and driveability of modern cars

I like the shape of the R171 and that range also hits the sweet spot on my list of desireables.
Most excellent choice which is why in my post, I included mostly all R171 stuff :D

Thanks for the welcome and the info. I'll do my best to attend that because I haven't yet had a chance to examine an slk in close quarters, particularly the interior. Looking at pictures, I starting to get concerned that there may not be sufficient room behind the passenger's front seat to accommodate our dog. She's not large (true of both wife and dog), a Jack/Staffie cross, but she's my constant companion, always travelling back and forth to Ireland with me. She lies down and goes to sleep almost immediately on a long journey but I'll still need a seat belt point for her harness.

Has anyone here managed to accommodate a dog comfortably in an slk?

I doubt there's enough room behind the passenger seat, even with a small passenger and the seat moved forward... it really is quite small there. Here's how I transport my dog when I'm out in the SLK with him:

but then there's no room for a passenger!
@PetenLissa might just be at the meet on 5th Feb, and they have a a small dog that I'm sure they've carried with them in their SLK. :D
