Well after looking at a multitude of vehicles, (primarily Jaguars and BMW's), I stumbled across a very smart, (but somewhat old- 1998), SLK 2300 that caught my eye because she was in such an immaculate condition and she drove very well too!

I was only looking for a bit of a plaything and my purchase is somewhat impetuous so I am hoping that some of the forum members will provide me with a little moral support now that I have committed myself, (hoping to pick her up tomorrow)!

Already have too many vehicles, (Volvo Estate, Jeep Grand Cherokee and a Range Rover), not to mention my bikes, (BMW GSA1200, Benelli Tornado Tres and the classic Suzuki GT750 'Kettle'), so something may gave to go!

I have been trawling the Internet trying to identify any common problems but there does not appear to be too many bad traits, (but please correct me if my assumption is incorrect).

I also believe that the engine uses a camchain, (and not a belt), so that is one thing less to worry about.

I have noted that many Mercedes seem to be afflicted with corrosion issues but 'mine' appears to be solid and very genuine and even the original alloys are unmarked which isn't bad considering she has done around 98,000 miles since registration in 1998.

Although a little late in the day what areas should I pay particular attention to?

The test drive was fine, (engine and gearbox appeared to be faultless along with steering, suspension and brakes), although I was expecting a little more from the engine considering it is 'supercharged' but is this primarily intended to simply improve engine efficiency rather than performance?

All in all a very fine machine and I believe they are beginning to appreciate as a modern 'classic'?

I am a reasonably handy mechanic although my forte is electronics and hi tech and I have written many articles on other sites regrading my experiences of repairing the usual, (as well as the very unusual), faults that can occur on some of today's complex vehicles and will be more than happy to document any 'issues' that I may come across during the next few days, weeks or months - but hopefully not at all!

Take care out there!

Martian. 1998 2300 SLK.

Welcome to the forum Martian I had my 2000 320 just over a year bouhht it with 82,000 miles on the clock have had to replace a few bits crankshaft sensor, brake switch, heater fan control, prop shaft bearing and changed oil and filter but would be lost without my OBD2 reader, I would make it a priority but you will need an adaptor as pree 2000 models have a different fitting.

Regards Stuart.

Ps have Suzuki RE5 and a Bonneville 750

AveL Du, Stuart,

Many thanks for the very warm welcome and apologies to all for getting the model syntax wrapped round my head, (my excuse is that I haven't got her home yet)!

Great to see that there are fellow bikers with similar interests - and as per my original post the SLK design just appears to be so right!

Ok on the parts list, to date, and that does not sound too bad and you could expect a similar list from most manufacturers, (some being a lot worse)!

Always fancied the rotary Suzuki, (also fancied a rotary Norton), but there were none around when I was in a position to acquire one and this is my third Kettle!

Hoping to get a Panigale next year - but will have to wait and see!

Will have the bodywork and leather polish waiting in the garage!
