Hi,

I have been lurking around this site for a bit now whilst I was pondering getting a new car.

A barrister who does some work for me said he was selling his SLK so I had a look at it and liked it. It's a 2001 SLK230k Auto in Blue. Here is a (not too good) pic of it for you to see.

I bought it to replace my 1988 Escort Convertible.

It has a full service history up to a year ago and I had an 'A' service done last week so it remains fully stamped up in the book.

That said, it has 2 faults. The roof requires a shove as it is sticking where it meets the top of the windscreen and I am losing a little bit of oil. I had a look under the bonnet and found where I think it is coming from. There is oiil on the front of the engine just underneath the plastic coverings. Not sure if these are common faults so any help would be appreciated.

Dave,

The oil leak sounds like the cam adjuster, if the leak in at the very top front under the small plastic cover. The cover will just pop off and the adjuster is about 3 inches round. If this is leaking you need to replace it. There is a new wire conector that needs to be installed where the wires connect to it. That prevents oil wicking into the wires. If not fixed oil will wick all thur the wires to the main computer and damage it. The top make need to be lubed, check oil level in trunk for top. If after lubing all the joints in the top and fluid in top is full, remove the headliner (9 screws, 3 in front and 3 on each side and slide it forward) and make sure the release is not leaking fluid and is moving freely.

Hi, Took a couple more pictures of the car just before I washed it so you can see it.

I fixed my roof problem, just had to use brute force and ignorance to get the roof down and then spray GT85 all over the hooks at the front of the roof. Now it opens like a dream.

Hi Rodge...looks a tidy motor. Like all cars and remember yours will be about 9 yrs old, they require TLC at that age, but the rewards are well worth it. This is a great forum and the people are decent. Enjoy your new car and this forum.
