A liitle about me. in the past five years I have owned two Vettes.and a Miata....Was looking at the new ND Miata and it was king of a let down. As I was leaving the lot I saw this red roadster. A closer look revealed it was a Mercedes.......Darn. I deel t is a tad showy.......But no more than a Corvette. I have ZERO knowledge of the brand and as the years went by I heard these horror stories about buying them without or out of warranty. I will pay the dealer for service if it's reasonable. One of the things I want to learn here . Is the car problemsome or very reliable . Does every one use the ABC Service with the dealer? I have never had a Merceded and don't want to appear showy.... and it's red In any ase I am sure most of not all my answers will come from reading the threads.......I really want to like this car.....and I want to blow $28000.

Hi and welcome to SLKWorld.com from the UK Midlands - Thanks for joining us! :)

I use a local independent for servicing now... and I really don't want to tempt fate by telling you how reliable the car has been! :D

On this forum under the heading of US South East Regions look for posts on NC/SC Group meets for pictures of past meets. On Facebook under NC/SC SLK Group

Good way to meet others and learn about SLK's by talking to other owners.

Come out and join us.

On service if you are not buy it from a MB dealer you might want to have the dealer to service it. MB gives you free roadside service for 18 months if you spend $100 in a year with them. Dealer will do any a check for recalls and will do service campagins frr of charge. By the Myrtle Beach dealer does a free wheel aligment when they service it and will do a free check of the CEL if it comes on. MB has gone to just A and B service and other items serviced on miles or age. The main difference is on B brake fluid is changed. We have a great indy in the area that can save on repairs compared to dealer prices.

Welcome from Wirral, England.

The answer to your question depends on which model you are looking at.
There are several body types if you include pre and post facelift versions of the R170/171/172.
There are several engine types.

When looking through the threads on reliability you should bear two things in mind.
R170/171 cars are much older and older cars show signs of wear through age and neglect.
People are more likely to post that they have a problem that they want help with and
unlikely to post when there is nothing wrong (other than sharing drives/photos etc).

When you do get an SLK you should have a look at the SmartTop. #1 addition for many of us.

Welcome from North Carolina. Mine is old and very Red. So far, only normal maintenance except for a harmonic balancer ($400). I too was a little reluctant, but so far the pleasure has far exceeded the cost. The forum is a great place for knowledge. Enjoy your search!

Welcome from South Africa.. All cars need a lot of TLC and if the one that you are looking at diddn't quite get that, then you may have some expense ahead of you.. My Local Mechanic is not a MB Dealer but he sure know how to sort out my car and keep the bills down!! I could not want a better car to put a smile on my Dial!!
Dave.
