I'm not sure who I'm supposed to contact for help with this. Mods4Cars doesn't have customer support, and neither does the SLK store.

I just purchased and installed the SmartTop module in my '02 SLK 32 AMG, and the top will not open at all now. The LED on the module blinks quickly indicating it is working okay. I can get the windows to open when I tap the unlock button on the remote twice. But the top will not open with either the remote or the button on the console. There is noise coming from the fuse block by the battery when I try to open the top, remotely or with the button, like an actuator is trying to work but nothing happens. I have double-checked all of the connectors, and I used pliers to make sure the taps and connectors were secure.

Who can help me with this?

moving to general discussion. help will arrive shortly. have you read the diy? try a search, top right.

where did you buy it? mods4cars does have support but this forum will be your best bet. slkstore sells but does not support

Thanks for moving this post to the right place.

The latest: the top started to work using the button on the console. It opened about halfway and then quit. I didn't have the car running at the time, so I tried to start the car. Now it acts like a dead battery: the interior lights dim and go out and a loud clicking sound comes from the fuse block by the battery, and the car won't even crank over. The battery is fully charged, I just verified that. So now the top is partially in the trunk, the windows are down and the car is dead. Good thing it was still in the garage!

I bought the SmartTop from the SLK Store, btw. I read the DIY for the 170, and nothing jumps out that I may have missed. Search didn't seem to turn up anything similar either.

obviously you need to fix the battery issue first and it might solve the other

Try charging the battery with a battery tender overnight before attempting to operate the roof. Was the roof working fine BEFORE the SmartTop install?

After charging the battery, I would start the engine first. With the engine running try the SmartTop function with the center console button.

I am not familiar with SmartTop for the R170. Perhaps those who have it in their R170 may chime in and help.

^^ What they said! It sounds like - for whatever reason - your battery is too low to either start the car or completely actuate the roof. I would do a couple of things :

1] Try charging the battery with it disconnected from the car.
2] Measure the "sleeping" current draw on the battery - it should be well below 1 amp.

I'm also not familiar with the R170 install, but it sounds like the module is working, just that the battery is too low...

Thanks for the advise folks. I put on a slow charge last night so I'll give it another try this morning. I hope that's all that is wrong, the installation went so smoothly.

And yes, the top was working perfectly the day before. I had it down to install the WindRestrictor. :) Which looks fantastic, btw. I was hoping to take it out for a test drive yesterday but the top issues nixed that idea. And it was sunny and 80 degrees. :(

Okay, battery took a charge and the car starts up now. Using the button the top opens and closes the old-fashioned way just fine. But now the SmartTop is not working at all: no one touch operation on the console button, no remote operation. Before the battery issue the SmartTop would open both the windows after 2 clicks, now it won't do anything. The LED is blinking happily away like all is goos, but no bueno.

Is there a procedure to reset the module? I can drag the laptop out there and hook it up to see what the settings are.

we have seen this before and the unit had to be replaced. email Ken at [email protected] or email him from the website and see what his thoughts are.

in addition, email mods4cars at their link

is it programmed properly and not set to 0 but 2?

Do you know the procedure to turn off or inactivate the SmartTop?

If not remove the +12V feed to the SmartTop, turn off engine and wait a good 15 minutes. Reconnect the 12V feed to SmartTop, check the LED (should flash 1 per second). Try SmartTop function either with center console button or remote key.

Function 2 - One-Touch top operation ( 0=OFF / *1=ON WU / 2=ON WD / 3=EXT WU / 4=EXT WD )
When enabled, the convertible top switch operation is enhanced as follows:
Holding down the switch in either direction will operate the top as long as the switch is held.
Setting 1 is standard one-touch mode with windows up (WU) after top open. Setting 2 is standard one-touch mode with windows down (WD) after top open. Settings 3 and 4 are the extended settings, same as 1 and 2, but additionally it is possible to turn the ignition off and pull the key out while the top still continues. This even allows getting out of the car and locking the doors by remote, while the top is still closing.
Settings 3 and 4 require extra caution to avoid injury by moving top parts!

Success!

It works!:rb

I had configured the settings by connecting it to a laptop before starting the installation. Just hooked it up to the laptop again and found that setting 1 was set to 0, which is 'Disabled'. Changed the setting to 1 and everything works as advertised! :Banane10:

Thank you everyone for the guidance and patience. Y)

This is truly an awesome mod. The SLK just isn't complete without it. Gotta go take it out for a spin now. See ya! :burnout:
