Hi guys my mechanic has my car because I wan't my bulk check light off. I pointed him to this forum and he read everything about the subject and did what was suggested. Please help; below is a direct quote from his email to me

"Bulb check light is illuminated all the time, turn key on,, of course it goes through the check and all dash bulbs are on.

Once starting vehicle it goes on immediately, the head light switch is in the off position, there are only 2 front and 2 rear bulbs on and they are working with the same intensity the rear sockets are clean and rust free, the fronts look fine but have not dismantled as of yet. Any ideas would be helpful.

In addition to the above my mechanic sent another email to me about the same subject, feedback anybody?

Could you also check if the lamp delay shut off is standard or not? I didn't think that this age of car had that system, and if it's not original equipment, could that also be part of the reason the check lamp is on.

light

I used to get this problem with the nearside (UK) brake lamp would appear to blow, so lighting up the warning on the dash, in fact the lamp was ok it was the holder being a bit corroded. Quick clean and all is tickty boo.

Same here.

Had this twice for tail light.
Look at the grey holder. If the two metal strips aren't mirror shiney give them a clean.
Both of mine were milky when this happened.

The system still show up as bulb out until you turn the engine over.

Ok guys my mechanic gives up he has done everything mentioned and is stumped. I even got him in touch with the original owner and he wasn't much help. I am going to pick up my car now with the check light build still on.

Ok just talked to Alan my mechanic and he is going to do disconnect the battery. In the mean time I am going to go pick it up hopefully in the half hour it takes for me to get there a miracle will happen.

usually we recommend a battery reset
make sure you have the radio code
disconnect the battery for a minimum of 30 mins
reconnect and reset clock and radio
check lights

Have a similar thing with my car... have been told by an auto electrician it is because have led bulbs in and they have a different current drain to standard bulbs, computer is fooled by this and thinks there is a bulb fault.... Not sure whether is correct or not but it did sound plausible....

Just got my car back and bulb warning light still on even with battery disconnected and reconnected. By the way my battery is new got it last month. Wouldn't start during the coldest day of the year. Had AAA come out and change it to a new battery.

Alan, my mechanic, is out of ideas re the build warning light. It is always on no matter what lights are on or off. He did say have my radio/audio guy check to see if somehow they connected it to the light system. I had asked Audio Heaven this question and they checked saying the radio looks like it was connected correctly. I will ask them again if there is any chance it could be the cause of the bulb warning light. I have to go to Audio Heaven again anyway on Saturday to try and fix my antenna for AM/FM reception. The antenna fix I got from this forum and they are going to try it. Hope I have better luck than I did with the bulb warning light. I love this car and I don't mind living with warning lights if I have too especially because nothing is broken or malfunctioning except the warning lights themselves maybe.

@padacol's suggestion above about LED lights might be useful... if you have an LED bulb anywhere that's been used to replace the original, then that could quite easily cause a bulb warning light. They also look very different to regular bulbs, so should be easy to check. :D

LED lights were checked and Alan did go one by one by process of illumination making sure they weren't the culprit.
I'm not sure that going "one by one" would troubleshoot the issue... if there's more than 1 LED bulb, wouldn't swapping out one of them at a time still leave an LED bulb in the circuit to potentially still flag up the error?

PS. I couldn't help but smile at "process of illumination" :D ... perhaps you meant process of elimination :D :D

Does the bulb out message specify which lamp is at fault? Apart from the suggestions already regarding LEDs it is probably worth checking this isn't something to do with the back up camera install. It's common practice to tap into the reverse light circuit to power the camera when reverse is selected perhaps this connection is causing the error? Just a thought.

Alan is one of the best go to mechanics recommended by CarHelp Canada. He is frequently on TV and has his own radio talk show. I admit to knowing zero about electronics or mechanics so I seek out people who know their stuff.a I admire a mechanic who says he is willing to take advice and try it. He did take the time to read through all the posts on the subject. He did, it didn't work, he waisted an entire day and at the end he didn't charge me because he couldn't fix it. He told me to check with respect to the radio hook-up and I'm doing tomorrow with a specialist in audio.

I like the illumination thing. It's funny but it was by mistake. I can't spell or type as I am sure most of you have figured out by now.

The warning light was on before the back-up camera was installed. I bought the car from the original owner with the warning light on. I brought it to a Mercedes dealership before I purchased it and was assured everything was working. The bulb warning light actually was warning me about nothing. They said likely due to aftermarket bulbs but the car was in excellent condition and not to worry about it; so I bought the car.
