I've wanted an SLK for years but its just not been practical. I'm now finally in a position where I can afford a 3rd car and therefore a roadster is a possibility.

Hope to pick up a R170 over the next few days :) Looking for a 230 preferably in silver or black with as little rust as possible.

Welcome from the Wirral.

Many of us started from the same point as you.

I'm sure you'll enjoy every minute in whichever slk you choose.

One thing missing from ALL of the glovebox manuals...

They all come with a free smile.

Good luck with your hunt.

Just got back from picking up my first SLK. A 2001 SLK230 in Brilliant Silver with black leather. A little bit of rust, but that seems inevitable on these. Otherwise it's in great condition with a few extras such as the AMG wheels and heated electric seats.
First impressions are good on the 100 mile drive home. Performance and handling are better than I was led to believe. I think mine has a subtle aftermarket exhaust. It sounds a bit more throaty but nothing silly.
A weekend of detailing awaits me!

That was quick

Shame, a week earlier and you could have brought it over to Duxford.

Well done on your purchase. They certainly reward a loving polish and care. Maybe you'll be able to get to one of the Midlands meetings some time.

Also you may not know this:

1) The starter is a self starter in that you turn the key and engage the starter then release. The starter will continue until it fires up. Apparently the ECU (or something) can get confused if this procedure is not followed.

2) Assuming it's an auto, you can reset the box by following the procedure here: http://www.slkworld.com/general-discussion/70666-reset-transmission-adaptive-learning.html

It sets it back to the factory settings and normally makes the car more responsive.

Thanks for the tips. I normally take ages buying a secondhand car, but having sold my previous car (Audi A5) a couple of weeks ago, and my new Audi TTS still sitting in a factory in Germany somewhere (delivery due mid June), I needed to get something quick. I have been using my Dads Honda Jazz for the past two weeks, but in the interest of my self respect that couldn't continue for long! Having owned fast cars for over 20 years, a 60bhp car comes as something of a shock when pulling out of junctions and overtaking.
