Well, can't think of a better place to do it, so I'll do it here!

As most of you are probably aware, I've failed to feel the love for the new R172. Just too many little things that don't do it for me - maybe too much love for the R171.

I'd pretty much decided I was going to sell the '350 stateside, and either replace it with a R172 or a R171 '55. I originally planned on picking up the lowest mileage, latest '55 I could find - only caveat was I had decided I wanted to get a color combo I really liked; don't get me wrong, I love my black on black, but wanted something different. Figured I'd have to retro fit proper brakes to it, so put that into the cost model.

As it turns out, one of the members here had the exact color combo I was looking for, Firemist Red, with a Red/Black interior. Only downside was it was an '05. Upside was barely 8k miles, the most immaculate condition I've even seen on an 6 year old car, absolutely spotless history and maintenance, and still under Mercedes warranty.

Don (-1-) decided he was ready to sell, and I decided I was ready to buy, so I hopped on a plane last week and headed up to Virginia. Car was better than described(!!), and showed the love and care associated with a passionate owner. We ended up making a deal that made both of us happy, and I got to spend a couple of days enjoying each others company - wish all car purchases where this enjoyable!

I'd kinda decided that if I picked up the car, I'd have it shipped down to Louisiana. Looking at the awesome springtime weather, decided to put 1000 miles or so on my "new" car, and take the scenic route down south through the Smokies. Absolutely stunning drive home over two days with a Sunset over Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, and the "Monster on the Block" has a new home!

Enough words - some pictures are in order! :biglaugh:

Apply liberal amounts of water, some wax and the bugs be gone.

Note the assistant. Not that he assisted much, but he did keep me company :)

Gotta show some love to the '350 - she was feeling cheated on!

Congrats John. You have to be happy with your new ride. Always loved the look of Don's 55. Sounds like you got a great deal from a great guy.

CONGRATULATIONS !!

Both R171's look real good. I see a trip to Colorado in the near future.

Some retro-fitting of updated instrument cluster perhaps. Hope it retains the passenger-side outside rear-view mirror tilt-on-reverse feature, and the driver seat rearward-movement-with-steering wheel-upward-tilt convenience entry-exit feature.

So remember Don still has an SLK, so I can't imagine he'll quit spending time here! It's definitely spring time down here, and I've had non-stop top down weather since I got back.

Eddy - gonna go with a Quaife LSD and some short tube headers performance wise, and already looking for an NTG2.5 COMAND head. Cluster would be nice, and if I happen across an F/L 030 steering wheel, I'll jump on it. Car is simply stunning as is, and the weather's great, so I'll probably end up with a couple of boxes laying around until winter - been enjoying driving too much to mod!

Only gripe I have (and one Don would have never experienced) is that whoever first mounted the front plate used four brutal screws, and managed to drill 6 holes with one false start in the front bumper. I've already talked to one of my favorite body guys, and he has some pretty good ideas about filling and touching them up.

:tu:Congratulations John, your new addition looks fantastic. WOW, 1+1+1=3 SLKs, two very unique SLK 55s!

:confused:Why did I sell? It was difficult, tomorrow would have marked four years of ownership. Debey and I had five vehicles, including her 2006 SLK 350 which we'll keep and enjoy together. My SLK 55 was the vehicle that I loved :le: the most, but drove the least (four thousand miles in four years). I blame that on work demands. Managing five car was a hassle, plus the expense. With nine months left on the SLK 55s MB extended warranty, it was best to sell now, with factory warranty remaining. I suggested we sell Debey's SLK 350, but that wasn't fair. John had expressed an interest several times. Everything considered :deal.

:)Debey and I enjoyed John's visit and company and thank him for a smooth, effortless sale. I haven't lost my SLK passion, but I'm disappointed with the R172 redesign and don't see one in my future. My Lexus IS 350 is my daily driver and I'll enjoy it, supplemented with our SLK 350 for fun.

Well done John...:tu: I know how Don takes care of his bits as I got my current alloys from him and they were (and still are) spotless.

You'll love the quaife, makes a big change in adhesion!!:burnout:

If you're interested I've got an extra '07 pre-FL steering wheel that's set up for paddles instead of buttons.

Gotta agree, the car looks like it just rolled of the production line, and Don's detailing made removing 1k miles worth of bugs easy.

Looking forward to the Quaife (and no, I'll probably not install it myself - I'll drop the diff and take it to a local shop I work with, have them drop it in.), and I'll keep the steering wheel offer in mind. The wheel in the car is in awesome shape - unlike the one on the UK '55 - so I'm not really in a rush to replace it. Just going to keep an eye out for a F/L 030 - I really like that wheel..

Hi John

God damn that SLK looks sooooo good , That has tobe THE best colour(sorry color) that MB sell , You can forget your blacks ,silvers ,greens or blue that colour kicks ass , I have to say im as green as a green thing on st patrick day LOL . My favorite colour with my favorite rims & its a 55 AMG & low mileage :hail: :hail: :hail: . I always looked at Don's avatar when i came across it . We did have a Crossfire in that colour & it like the silver & does not show the dirt .

Cool driving John you must be pinching yourself just to make sure its all real .

Cheers

Andy

Congratulations John. The car looks fantastic. Was just wondering if it was the assistant who took the shot of the 350 being watered down :D
