Hello guys,

My name is Hugo, I am Portuguese and actually living in Stockholm/Sweden.
I always loved the SLK look and last weekend I did a test drive of a SLK 55 AMG R171 and I think I will not resist and buy it :)
I wonder if you guys can give me some advices, is this car a problematic car? a lots of troubles? is it a good motor? which are the common problems?
I just loved the car and it's like new with all services done in Mercedes.
Thanks in advance for your precious advices.
Hugo

Hi Hugo, and welcome to SLKWorld.com from the UK Midlands - Thanks for joining us! :)

Some great R171 info, including Owner’s/Maintenance/COMAND manuals, etc.:

When you get it, don’t forget to lube those seals:

Download the car’s brochure:

Some tips to make your visit here more enjoyable:
  • Post your VIN (or VIN of a car you're looking at) in the Vehicle Datacard Request section to get a free datacard (options on the car).
FREE!! How to get a free data card!
  • If you haven’t, please use the 'search' feature at the top right of the page for your questions as they have probably been asked before. Remember, ‘Search’ is your friend.
  • If you wish to become PM (Private Message) capable, you need 15 posts. To get those 15 posts quickly, just go to the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section and welcome enough new members to obtain your needed posts to PM.
  • Want to post a picture? Start a new thread or make a post, click ‘edit’, click on the ‘paper clip’ or ‘advanced’ and/or ‘manage attachments’ then ‘choose file’ then ‘upload’ and ‘submit’! If iPhone pics, you need to rename any additional pics as iPhone names its pics all the same, image.jpg.
  • Want to 'like' or 'thank' someone’s comments? Use the ‘like’ button to the right or the ‘Thanks’ button, bottom right of any individual’s post that you like. This saves you having to comment.
  • New members should be aware that the 'New Posts' link in the info bar towards the top of the screen is a great way to see all of the posts you have missed since you were on the forum last. Remember to click 'mark forums read' under ‘quick links’ when you leave.

In my experience, the SLK 55 AMG is a fabulous car!

What age car are you looking at (i.e. what year), as that may impact people's answers of what to look for?

Also, check whether it's due any significant maintenance very soon. For example, the brake discs/rotors are very expensive to replace, if they're getting near to being ready for replacement.

When viewing a car, the following checklist may also be useful too:

Hi,

Thanks for your help. The car is from 2005 designo, it's a summer car as we have Snow the previous owner just took the car out few months during the summer.
My car is also a 2005 Designo, and I love it! It only had 25,000 miles on it when I bought it 18 months ago, and now has 39,000 miles... and I've enjoyed every mile of it! :D

yes, will be my FIRST upgrade :)

Can you tell me what actually changes in the car driving in D mode or Sport mode? Does it the power deliver change? suspensions? anything?
For the SLK 55 AMG, you have 3 driving modes for the 7G auto-transmission: C, S and M.

Changing transmission mode only changes the way the gearbox behaves, I don't think it changes anything else about the car.
C = Comfort (pulls away in 2nd gear, and changes gear earlier than S).
S = Sport (pulls away in 1st gear, and holds the revs for longer before changing).
M = Manual (use the steering wheel buttons/paddles for changing gears)

Thank you guys for the warm welcome I decided to go ahead and pick the AMG tomorrow :) exciting :)

Well I did read here some topics and I didn't get any further, I have noticed the delay in the pedal.. I pressed full pedal and then after +/- 1 second the car explode.. is that Piecha Power Converter really worth it? will the difference be noticeable? is there out any system that you recommend better? is that system something that can cause electronic problem/errors? no negative points to the car?
