Hello!

I've just had a big birthday and am now dangerously close to ticking the final age band box on feedback forms.... I feel that I should get an SLK in before its too late...

I have a 13 mile daily commute through lovely countryside and hope an SLK will enhance this....

Graphic designers are aesthetically cursed, ie fussy sods, so I have a particular idea about which colour / interior that i would like, obviously history, condition and low miles are important - consequently I have been searching for a month now...

I don't have a huge budget - up to 6k. Ideally Cubanite Silver with Grey heated leather, (said I was fussy!) Pre March '06 to avoid the big tax jump, preferably below 75k miles. Am prepared to be patient and will travel to get the right one (within reason!)

I may have found one, but have some reservations because it falls into the dreaded Camshaft Sprocket era. The car is at dealers in Wembley (200 mile round trip - thats fine) They wanted £500 non-refundable deposit to hold it for me, but I'm not prepared to do that without viewing it (they have sent me a video, which all looks good) It has just had a new MOT (No advisories) and will come with 6 months warranty (which they claim will cover engine and gearbox) has 3 previous (7 years last owner), 90,000miles on the clock. This could be the start of a wonderful relationship.

I have requested the engine number, and failing that, the VIN, (No info from them yet on this) so that I can check if its on the Sprocket Blacklist (Would really appreciate some guidance on how to check, once I have VIN?)

Are there any other signs I should look out for if I cant check the engine number online? (Vibration? Smoke? Rattles?)

I'm due to go there tomorrow afternoon (a little over 24 hours time as I write this!) so any advice would be greatly appreciated...

Many thanks and looking forward to joining the gang!

Hello Digs,

There's no quick check, but if the wear is moderately advanced, it will trigger the CEL. Dealers will obviously reset this, so a LONG and enthusiastic test drive is advisable.

Personally, I wouldn't take the chance, but if you really must due to your parameters then I think a comprehensive 12 month warranty is a minimum requirement. Check who underwrites the warranties. Establish their record for settling claims and find out how much it will cost to renew for a further 12/24 months at the end of the first term.

When I bought my 55 I insisted on 12 months 'Gold'. In the first 3 months it covered a new alternator and cold air injection pump. I chose not to renew (company wanted abt £800 I think from memory) after 12 months because everything was tickety-boo. If it was fitted with an early M272 I'd definitely expect to keep the warranty in place...

Dear SLK'ers

I have found out the engine number - 272963 30 255981

As this is a lower number than the first 'improved' engine number of 2729..30 468993, then I'm guessing the car is too risky to purchase? (Unless I can find evidence of the Balance Shaft being replaced?)

Many thanks for all the advice, looks like i might be looking elsewhere, maybe concentrating on a 280 as Im pretty sure they are all unaffected by this issue?

Thank you.

Our main thread is here if you have not read it

https://www.slkworld.com/slk-r171-general-discussion/108306-balance-shaft-sprocket-m272-m273.html

also, 280 is also affected

SLK 280 2005–2008 2,996 cc (2.996 L; 182.8 cu in) V6 (M272)

what do you mean:
first 'improved' engine number of 2729..30 468993

there was no improved engine for this issue until the '31' series

468993 is the end of the affected range but nothing improved in that range

Welcome from Gloucester uk (just up the road)
I went through the same thing with my 350, worrying about balance shaft issues but in the end a local Merc specialist told me that, even though it’s not a guarantee, after 70k miles it’s likely to have had the issue show up by now if it was going to. He also told me that he hasn’t seen many with the issue at all. If it occurred he could have Done the job for approx £2500 which really put my mind at rest.
The 350 is a great car with stupid amounts of power and will put a smile on your face every time you drive it.
Good luck with the search.
