I've just joined to help in looking for a modern classic: an early 230 SLK.

I've got older British sport cars and want something more user-friendly (and not filled with Lucas electrics) so this seems the ideal choice.

But where to start in getting one?

I've bought/ordered the right books, I think: 1) The Essential Buyers Guide by Chris Bass; 2) Bernd Koehling's R170 book; and 3) Brian Long's one on the R170s, too.

Are there any others that would be useful? Essential or Useful or Nice-to-have or Waste-of-space?

What about Owner's or Shop Manuals? I'd like a nice, traditional PAPER based one that I can get all greasy and dog-eared, but it seems the only one(s) available are on-line downloadable. Any recommendations?

One thing that puzzles me greatly are the colors available: Black and Silver are ubiquitous; Blue and Red not uncommon; and Green not so often seen, or Yellow seems fairly scarce. Are there others on early cars?

I'm partial to the Blue or Black with solid black interior, but might like something a little more individual...

My perception is that these early SLKs are now pretty fully depreciated and I should be able to get a nice, relatively low mileage one for a not-too-painful price. It'll be a "keeper" but I do wonder about whether its likely to start appreciating soon? I know it will, eventually...

I want the car to use and enjoy regularly and not be a garage queen.

Any advice for a buyer/new owner? And I will trawl through the other treads. Rust? Yes, I KNOW about rust... the LBCs seem to have come equipped with factory installed rust as standard..... Other concerns?

Hi James, and welcome to SLKWorld.com from the UK Midlands - Thanks for joining us! :)

I'll leave others to respond about any good PAPER Owner's or Shop Manuals, as I'm sure someone here must be able to advise on that...

As for finding "a nice, relatively low mileage one for a not-too-painful price"... good luck with that, as I'm sure they are still out there for you to find, although I've seen a couple in the past few months with very low mileage at (what I would consider to be) silly asking prices. I guess everything is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it though, and I hope you manage to find what you're looking for at a price you're happy to pay! :tu:

Welcome from the Sacramento Valley SLK Enthusiasts!

Arctic white is the only color for me or maybe polar white! I can't do black!
