Hi, This is my first posting on here and my first Mercedes, a nice black 2005 SLK 350 with 60,000 miles on the clock and almost everything working. It is fairly standard except for heated seats that currently don't work and deep red leather seats that make it look rather good. It is a G-Tronic and goes rather well. Not the quickest car I have owned but very good nonetheless.

Rovers and Mercs

Hi and a warm welcome to the forum from Surrey

Two 3.5 Litre Rovers? They must be getting on a bit now! :)
These days the Rover name is devalued from all the Honda clones and badly designed stuff that the badge was stuck on in the 70s, 80s and 90s but they were in the same quality sector of manufacturing as Mercedes before that.

My Rovers are a 3.5 litre V8 coupe from 1969 and a saloon version of the same car from 1972. I could not make my mind up which body style I prefer so have one of each. :) Rover and Mercedes sit well alongside each other.

The Coupe has an Oselli built engine with SD1 Vitesse heads and pistons, Offenhauser manifold and a Holley 390CF carb. I fitted a German ZF 4 speed auto box to it last year. It was featured on Top Gear about 10 years ago, can be found on You Tube.

The Saloon looks standard but has a TVR 3.9 litre engine and unique 5 speed manual gearbox but will also be gaining a ZF auto shortly. It has just been rebuilt and is arriving on Tuesday!

In the 60s Mercedes and Rover were quite equal in terms of quality and Rover were about to launch a very modern car called the Rover 4000 that it spent £10,000,000 developing and had tested in Africa and up to the arctic circle to ensure reliability. It was a V8 of 3.9 litres, had self levelling suspension, central locking and electric windows. It was fully developed and tested and production ready. The car was axed in 1971 due to pressure from William Lyons (Jaguar MD) who was very influential in British Leyland as he thought the new Rover would compete with the XJ6. After that Rover had spent all their budget and only had funds allocated to get the Range Rover to market. That worked out quite well and Rover lives on through the very successful off roaders.
