So I was looking for something that would allow me to take advantage of the brilliant winter weather here in the UAE when I spotted a used black, 2012 SLK 250.

It was reasonably priced, OK condition and if the odometer is to be believed, reasonably low mileage.

I question the odometer simply because this car was imported from Japan and is originally from the US.

The speedo reads MPH instead of the preferred KPH but the little digital KPH screen has so far kept me fine-free, and according to the map that comes up on the NAV system I'm somewhere in Boston, but I'm fairly sure that's not right.

The black AMG wheels make this pretty much a one-off here, which makes it stand out a little.

I'd had it a week when a young lady in a BMW reversed into it, and a few days later it gained scratches while parked up in an underground lot.

When it went to the shop for the repairs they offered to polish it, which I foolishly accepted. It came back looking like they'd used wire wool and sea shells.

I few hours hard labor and it's looking half decent again but more work still required.

As if the paintwork wasn't enough of a surprise when I put the car in it told me I had 700 miles to the next service, now it tells me I'm 14k overdue.

On the inside it had one of those awful rear view mirror LED screens that do neither well, and sensors feeding into an upside down display taped to the top windshield trim. Barely adequate under normal conditions and entirely useless in the Middle East sunshine. So the camera feed is (hopefully) going into the back of the COMAND unit and the sensor display behind the seats.

If I can find a way to change the map region and replace the speedo for KPH I'll be as close to happy as I expect to get.

Performance wise its fairly sharp but putting it into sport mode the accelerator functions more like an on/off switch, setting off at a leisurely pace until the turbo wakes up then it's off like yesterday's too late. For some reason I thought that a RaceChip might make it more driveable - not sure why. Anyway - it doesn't, it just makes it more frantic.

It's fun drive, handles well enough and when the weekend comes along it makes a welcome alternative to the SUV.

An unexpected upside is that I can get the golf clubs OR the wife in, but not both.

Thanks for the welcome from everyone. You guys obviously have a close knit community here and its a pleasure to be part of it.

I look forward to asking stupid questions about the obvious and walking round slapping my forehead when I get the answers.

We have the weather out here but we don't have the beautiful scenery that some of you have, so just a tad envious.
